Democrats deny extinction claims
http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Democrats-deny-extinction-claims/2007/09/02/1188671787523.html The Australian Democrats' candidate for Brisbane has dismissed claims the party is facing electoral extinction, predicting a resurgence in Queensland at the coming federal election. A Morgan poll last month put the Democrats' nationwide vote at one per cent - down from 1.5 per cent a few months earlier - and trailing Family First on 1.5 per cent and the Greens on 6.5 per cent. It has been reported that the ACT Democrats have less than 100 members and face having their registration cancelled. Dems to continue even if result is bad http://www.smh.com.au/news/breaking-news/dems-to-continue-even-if-result-is-bad/2007/10/21/1192301129256.html The Australian Democrats will not fold if they lose all their Senate seats at next month's election, leader Lyn Allison says. Recent poor polling has highlighted the Democrats' declining support, which is putting the party at risk of losing all four of its Senate seats. But Senator Allison said Friday's Morgan poll that put the party's support at about 2.5 per cent seemed to be a "glitch". Senator Allison said the latest poll figure was lower than any others done this year, which had averaged about five per cent. "I'm still confident we can do it," she said. "We were neck to neck with the Greens in Queensland, doing quite well in Victoria as well, so I think that this latest Morgan poll is probably a bit of a glitch and there is more support out there than that suggests for us." |
