I am a good person. I raise my boys to be good boys. My parents were good people, my sister is a good person and none of us are spiritual. I think it's one of the greatest misconceptions that only religious people are moral and good. It is entirely false, and religious arrogance is annoying yet typical. I have read many posts by abu that say that atheists/agnostics are immoral. That is untrue. It is particularly ironic coming from such a vile religious cult such as Islam whose morals are questionable at best and repulsive at worst.

tallow - I like beer too. very spiritual of you to link beer with unspirituality. :-)
jordan - Some of the most spiritual things are from people who say they are unspiritual. "religious" people make me wanna puke. |

;D I suppose I'm agnostic. I like a good wine, a good beer and a good scotch..followed closely by a good whine. But I agree that just by being a good person, it makes you spritual. |

I find it hard to be "spiritual" cause I don't even know if anything spiritual exists. I've been trying to find if god exists for about 5 years now and I just cant believe so because I've never seen anything to say so. I, along with 6 others, did see something that, if I remember correctly, was a spirit when I was a teenager but I don't know if I can rely on it cause humans are fallible when it comes to remembering events.
Trying to find god seems you need to take a leap of faith and believe without evidence, this is something I just cant seem to do as it goes against all rational thought to do so. So at this point in time I am un spiritual for sure. |

You can have Christian values without being religious or believing in a particular God. Some of the philosophies quoted in the Bible and no doubt the Koran can be applied to our lives to make us better people.
Spirituality can mean all sorts of things - kindness, intuition, compassion and even a belief that we have guardian angels or a universal power keeping an eye on us. Or it could just be a belief in the decency within ourselves that we try do what is right. |

queer, What about those ppl who recall NDE's [near death experiences] and OBE's [out of body experiences]? I've got two seperate DVD's [christian religious] docu's, with 'reconstructed' accounts of many NDE's. In one, a woman has a cardiac arrest, and dies in an ER, is declared dead. Then shorlty later she spontaneously, 'awakens' [back to life]! She recounts to hospital staff, how she floated out of her body while 'dead'. Doctors and staff are not convinced, were skeptical. The woman insisted it was real, and said that while out of her body she saw what she described as a single red shoe, on the hospital roof. A hospital porter was sent up to the roof, .......and came back with the red shoe. Is these experiences ppl have, just a 'mind-bend'? ++++++ Just to be clear, I'm not on any medication, and i do not take recreational drugs. And i also experience 'waking' OBE's occasionally. .....a very, very exhilarating experience! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Out-of-body_experience From personal experience, i do believe in this 'stuff' [spirits]. Personally, i believe that we [all mankind] are spirits, and that we are locked in this earthen body, while we 'go to school' here [until we die]. |

Yeah, I just don't know, I find it hard to trust anything without physical evidence and personal testimony isn't physical evidence I'm sorry to say.

My own feelings are that the major religions have a lot of commonality in terms of what are acceptable moral outcomes. Basically the majority of us feel compassion for other human beings, and for those who don't, it's a case of "You reap what you sow" or "What goes around comes around" - It's also captured by the Buddhist idea of 'Karma'. A number of religions take that concept beyond death. There are overiding principles such as caring about other people and the world around you, coupled with wisdom and a goal to improve one's self and to pull together to improve society in general. These are what count. The different religions may do things slightly differently, but hey. Coles do things one way and Woolworths do things another way, but in the end, they both sell groceries. |

We should also point out that one doesn't need religious values to be a good person that cares about human beings and is moral, these things are instinctual in human beings and religion or "god" does not give them to us.
All people are good by nature, its other factors that come in to play that make people greedy, selfish and evil. Consumerism has humans by the balls and turns people into very superficial beings, ego turns people into beings that care too much about them self and not enough about others. How a child is raised and the values his/her parents don't have can lead to very evil people. Theres endless factors that come into it that determine how people are but given the right (normal loving) circumstances, people generally turn out to be honest, trustworthy and sincere human beings all without religion. |

You are also right about other factors playing a big part in how a person behaves. But somewhere along the track, whether it comes from relatives or early teachings at school - if a person has taken the wrong path at some time in their life - previous exposure to religious indoctrination can stabilise them - whether they are conscious of this indoctrination or not. |

Spiritual is a bad word because although I don't believe in a God/s nor believe in a soul, I feel. And in ways that don't seem purely physical.
I don't know what to call it when I do feel spiritual, and these are usually at times when I am affected by moments of clarity, or witness to some extra ordinary naturally beautiful event, or sometimes an ordinary event that I realize I have previously taken for granted a thousand times before. When my son greets me with a smile every morning. I am a normally empathetic person, so I thought that I could rationally understand the depth of feeling in having a little baby. I only know that the thought of him being taken away would be like kneeling at the edge of an abyss. So I am a Materialist that feels spiritual on many occasions. I don't know the author but there is a beautiful saying, The years remember what the days never knew. |
