Title: Glasses Post by easel on Oct 25th, 2008 at 3:09pm
I don't have perfect vision. I am slightly short sighted in both eyes. Each eye is -0.75 according to my prescription. The RTA does not require that I wear glasses to drive, but my imperfect vision is noticeable, when I am wearing glasses. When I am not wearing glasses, and I get used to the this, I do not notice that my eyes are bad, because it is so slight.
I have problems recognising things in the distance. At 30m, I have to squint to make out a car number plate, past 40m I will not be able to read a number plate. Street signs are a bit of a hassle to read, as in the names of streets. I will sometimes see someone in the distance and go to say hello, then realising it is someone who I have never met before and have confused them with someone else. I am very good at recognising individuals body language, posture etc because of this and do not have this problem so frequently. I choose to wear my glasses perhaps 15 days out of the year, for my own personal enjoyment. I do not want to become accustomed to having perfect visual ability. I have good reasons for this I think. You see, as I do not realise my eyesight is bad, and it really isn't, I get used to things being slightly fuzzy, when wearing glasses I have a ball. For example, that pigeon over there, is just a pigeon, but when I wear my glasses that pigeon I can see in such greater detail it is amazing. That pigeon that was walking around, I now notice it has a twig in its' mouth, going to build a nest I assume. I see rubbish blown around by the wind in the distance, which I would not have noticed before. Have you noticed if you take a photo of a light source, it will distort in the image and be kind of fuzzy and not as how you personally view the light? That's what it is like for me when looking at street lights at night. When I put my glasses on the image becomes so much sharper and not a fuzz, I can actually see the street light. Same with the stars, when I put my glasses on the starts actually become dots of shiny stuff, not fuzzy shiny things. I also notice zillions more stars, the really faint ones are impossible to see without glasses, they melt in to the sky. Trees are wonderful things also. Normally when I look at a tree, the leaves are a bit of melted green, but when I put my glasses on I can see all the leaves individually and watch them move about in the wind. I can see the bark, the knots in the wood, birds nests, dead limbs, everything becomes so much more detailed. The ocean on a light breezy day is another great thing to look at with glasses on. You can watch the ripples form and move around on the surface of the water, in fact you can follow the ripples for a fair distance and watch them go about their thing. Bush walking is also very nice, especially on dirt tracks. Normally the dirt tracks are just brown, but when wearing glasses you can actually see the dirt, the dirt rocks and normal rocks, which you would have neglected to notice before. The city is nice when wearing glasses, because there are so many people. You notice people smiling and talking in the distance, which you would never have noticed without them, the would have just been human shapes of blur where you can't recognise their facial expressions. Clouds cease to be white fluffy things, they now have depth to them and are much more featured. However, the best thing about wearing your glasses is rainy nights. If it is raining somewhat heavily, you go and put your glasses on, turn the floodlights on and aim them in to the sky, and watch the rain coming down reflecting the light. Without the glasses you can only see the rain when it is about a metre or so from you, the speed makes it hard to follow, with the glasses you can see the rain coming from a long way away and it is just nice to watch, though you do get wet. I'm pretty happy to not have perfect vision, and optometrists are angels in disguise. |

I have perfect vision, I can read a newspaper from about 7 meters away. Yet I still sometimes wear fake glasses for 'fashion' and to look 'intelligent.' Go figure.

I used to be very short sighted (-4.5 and -5). I opted to go with Lasic treatment a few years back and haven't looked back since. I do a lot of swimming, surfing etc, and not having to wear glasses makes everything so much easier.
I had one eye fixed for reading, the other for distance, but it's hardly noticeable. I seemed to adapt very quickly. It probably isn't suitable for everybody of course. |
Title: Re: Glasses Post by sprintcyclist on Oct 26th, 2008 at 6:28pm I just got my 2rd set of glasses. Worst was driving at night in the rain. computer work deteriorates my eyes, not wearing glasses I feel retians their ability to focus. Eye exercises helps them considerably. |
