Title: Are you an environmental vandal?
Post by tallowood on Jan 13th, 2009 at 9:14pm
Do you use internet?

Quote:
A report in The Times of London on Sunday generated a firestorm when Harvard physicist Alex Wissner-Gross was identified as saying a typical Google Web search on a desktop computer generates about 7 grams of carbon dioxide, making two searches comparable to bringing a tea kettle to boil.

"A Google search has a definite environmental impact," Wissner-Gross was quoted as telling the newspaper

Of course there is more to it then that just read the article and visit http://www.co2stats.com/

Computing power is increasing exponentially. What it boils down to is the means of power generation. Most of that is unsustainable at the moment, but you never know. Eventually we may see more solar power or even fusion.

Some of the new laser based technology (or even Quantum computers ?) might result in more power efficient CPU operation.

At the moment, I agree that the power used to drive computers worldwide is quite substantial.

So is it true?

Yes, the power used to drive computers worldwide is not negligible but alternatives to digital format and traffic are worth. IMHO, it is more environmentally friendly to store information on electronic devices then on paper and download documents via internet then drive a car to fetch them from libraries or book stores.

Sounds dodgy to me because of luck of exact specifications of a kettle size, initial temperature, atmospheric pressure, searches parameters, etc..
But I suppose a simple enough experiment can be designed to check it out.

Do you know how many times I use google a gay? Too many to smacking count! Where do you think I find all these pics for my posts?!

And that only makesup a portion, I use google for other things such as articles and websites, and I youtube, and troll forums all day.

I alone and boiling over 9000 pots a day! Excellent! My plan to destroy the world is coming to fruition!

Julz is helping me by cockteasing the lot of you cause she's so darn cute and you can't have her. Thereby forcing you to masturbate, and statiscaly you're more likely to do it in the shower or bathtub, which causes eventual plumbing problems... mwahahaha!!!!

Where does she live?  My son's coming back to Australia next month and he'll be living close to Sydney.  He could pop around and say hi and maybe keep an eye on Julz until you get a chance to visit.  Just as a special favour to you Jim....he'd wear a shirt though.

Pshhh! The fact that you have a shirtless photo of your son just waiting around to show is disturbing enough. But you seem to forget I'm an officer. Julz gets wet over the badge.

Your son would pee his pants if he had to have a talk with me..

That isn't my son, but Aussie men often go shirtless in the warmer months and there's nothing disturbing about that, even if a mother sees her son half naked.  It would only be considered abnormal in the US where slaughter and brutality takes precedence over nature.

That's debatable.  Security guards have no formal training, only a police check.  They are telling porkies if they call themselves officers and dare to compare themselves with a highly qualified police person.

I doubt it.  ;D
