Title: Some Basic Geography questions
Post by muso on Jan 20th, 2009 at 10:16am
Some questions that are worth considering. They are fairly basic, but very few people know the answers off hand. If you want to use your brain, do some simple research or calculations and work it out for yourself.  ;D

1 At what time(s) of day, can you look at the horizon and point to the  direction in which we are all moving with respect to the centre of the Galaxy at about 220 kilometres per second?

2. At which time of day, can you look at the horizon and point to the direction in which we are orbiting around the sun at about 30 kilometres per second? (note that this direction reverses every 6 months with respect to the stars)

3. (Easier) If you look down on the North pole of the Earth (and the sun) from above the plane of the Earth's orbit, is the Earth orbiting clockwise or counterclockwise?

4. At what time of year is the Earth closest to the Sun? Does this coincide best with Northern or Southern hemisphere summer?

2: midnight or midday.

4: I think it's the southern hemisphere summer.

Sprint why do you have a time zone in the first answer?

I wanted to be precise.
An invented answer sounds a LOT more convincing if it is precise.

Except that the question referred to a time when anyone on earth can look at the horizon and point in the appropriate direction.

Too easy. ;)

I'll answer the questions when a few people have tried. The Earth's orbit around the sun question is easiest. When the sun is exactly half up (or down) on the horizon, the direction of the sun is at exactly 90 degrees to the direction of the Earth in its orbit, and the whole plane defined by the horizon is at 90 degrees to the direction of the Earth's orbit around the sun, so it can't be at dawn and dusk, because the direction must be either straight up (the Zenith) or straight down through the centre of the Earth (the Nadir).
