Ultra-Orthodox Jews trash streets over starved toddler case

Parts of Jerusalem resemble a slum after days of protests by ultra-religious Jews angry at the arrest of an Orthodox woman accused of starving her child. The three-year-old is recovering in hospital from reported malnutrition.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews accuse the state of interfering in their affairs by arresting the woman and say it is inconceivable that a Jewish mother would starve her child.

Protesters smashed traffic lights, toppled fences and ripped up paving stones. Rubbish bins were set alight and streets have filled with smouldering garbage.

Media reports suggest the mother may have Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a mother deliberately mistreats a child to win sympathy.
