Actually 'French' didn't even really exist as a seperate language during this period. The vulgar Latin that the Gauls/Franks of the time spoke was a mixture of their original Celtic language with Latin, with a minimal Germanic (Frankish) influence. The number of words in modern French that have their origins in Germanic/Frankish numbers into the hundreds only, ie. no more than the amount of Arabic words in English.

Either way, they were Latin/Catholic in culture, language & religion, not Germanic.
