Title: rudds broadband
Post by sprintcyclist on Oct 27th, 2009 at 12:07pm

Quote:
Communications Minister Stephen Conroy has accidentally released a confidential report containing potentially damaging and embarrassing details about Telstra.

Analysts say the leak could put Telstra on the back foot in negotiations around the upcoming $43 billion National Broadband Network.

And in a further gaffe, the most sensitive information in the 252-page document is highlighted in yellow. This was presumably to make it easier to censor the information but instead has allowed Telstra's competitors and detractors to skip to the juiciest details.

Furthermore, many of the pages in the report, tabled in the Senate yesterday, are labelled "confidential" and are meant only for individuals with "National Broadband Network probity clearance".......

Telstra? Shame on him for tarnishing Telstra's impeccable reputation  ::)

So Stephen Conroy can harm Telstra's reputation even more than Telstra itself? I find that incredibly hard to believe.

Maybe it wasn't a mistake. Though I don't think Conroy is the sharpest tool in the Labor shed.

I remember living in Dubbo and getting the internet in about 2000. Eight years after this fact, I was still operating a 56k modem that could only run at about 28.8k.

I remember getting a flier for rural broadband once - promoted by the federal government. It was extortionate compared to the service I was already using ;D  - it only offered 1500 or slower and a laughable 250Mb per month. If they think that putting people on to that is actually a service to the community rather than a disservice, they need to get their attitudes adjusted.

For that particular communication, I chose the green option, and filed it in the appropriate place for recycling  ;D

Mercedes, even in Dubbo you should be able to use mobile broadband , and it can be a reasonably cheap option.

yes my brother in law asked me about that rural broadband scheme, and when he sent me the details, I was amazed at the audacity that any company, let alone one with supposed government backing, could offer such obscenely expensive, and anachronistic plans, 250Mb downloads, that is insane.
Needless to say, he did not take up the offer, and is looking into cable options.
If they can do foxtel to the area, then they can do high speed broadband as well, 20MB per sec or better is standard for cable, and beats the heck out of 1.5

Broadband here in AUS is definitiely too expensive. American friends of mine, who have come here have been amazed by our broadband bills. If Rudd is serious about extending broadband then perhaps he could look at the prices as well.
