US school district won't host prom dance after lesbian student's request to bring girlfriend

JACKSON, Miss. - A school in Mississippi has called off the annual senior dance after a lesbian student demanded she be allowed to bring her girlfriend.

The American Civil Liberties Union had demanded that the Itawamba County school district allow 18-year-old Constance McMillen to attend the prom with her date. A school board statement Wednesday announced the district wouldn't host the April 2 prom at Itawamba County Agricultural High School.

McMillen wanted to escort her girlfriend, who is also a student. McMillen also was denied permission to wear a tuxedo.

A school district policy requires that dates be of the opposite sex.

The district's statement never mentioned McMillen's request. But officials said the change was made due to recent distractions. District officials say they hope private citizens will host a prom.

Wouldn't it be great to be 18 in America?
You are old enough to go and die in some conflict in Iraq, or Afghanistan, but not old enough to know your own sexuality.

At least they will all have a good time if they take up the offer to be bused to New Orleans for a swanky do offered by a local hotelier, as an alternative, because of the schools cancelling their dance.

The school administrator will be reversed in court. It will be too late for this year's prom. But next year the lesbians and transvestites will all attend the prom.

Proms shouldn't be hosted by the school anyway. I remember my formal was organised by the students and although it was pretty boring and a waste of money, we were allowed to manage it however we wanted, without interference.

Why should we be surprised or even interested in another stupid decision coming from the USA? Surely, if it's stupid decisions you want to discuss, we have enough local ones to choose from.

Few can crystalise stupidity like these Americans.
