Title: Self-Sufficiency and Survival Foods
Post by Thy.Equitist on Jun 20th, 2010 at 9:36am
PREFACE

Before anyone shoots me down, for co-opting the General Board with green gardening stuff, I was directed here by clicking the 'Discuss' button in the Garden section.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just wanted to share one of my favourite quirky light-reading books and web-sites, on the subject of self-sufficiency and survival foods...
http://herbsarespecial.com.au/books_and_dvds/about-isabells-self-sufficiency-book.html
Quote:
Isabell Shipard, one of Australia's most knowledgable and sought after authorities on herbs and author of the acclaimed books How can I use Herbs in my daily life?  and How can I grow and use Sprouts as living food? says,
"For many years I taught Herb Courses, covering many edible plants, and included a segment on survival foods and the importance of self-sufficiency for possible hard times. People often expressed that I should put this information into a book.
With the economic squeeze in Australia, and severe drought experienced over large areas of farmland, just what will the future hold for average Australian families? Everyone is experiencing the pressure, as food, fuel and the cost of living has dramatically risen in price. In this 21st century we are seeing major disasters that are disrupting peoples lives in so many areas of the world. We must all be more conscious of ways to reduce, recycle, repair and reuse items and consider how we can all tread more softly on Planet Earth."
"What I desire is that all who read this book will be inspired and motivated to take action for the benefit of the planet."
We believe the book, How can I be prepared with Self-Sufficiency and Survival Foods? will be a valuable reference manual for every person and family. This book offers encouragement about the importance of being as self-sufficient as one is able and an action plan to help you 'ride the storms'. Isabell shows us how to be prepared with a step-by-step emergency management plan for food provisions and essential supplies.
The book is A4 size, 136 pages, and beautifully illustrated with over 100 coloured pictures. The full colour cover is celloglazed, with a durable stitched and bound spine.
We need to encourage one another to be as self sufficient as possible... now... in our gardens, as this is the most nutritious fresh food and and cheapest way to live in these times of rising prices. Growing our own food is very satisfying as well as beneficial to health and well-being.
Well none of the regulars here would shoot you down for that, Thy.Equitist, it is a very interesting, and a growingly ('scuse the pun) important subject.
A lot of us here a older people who have their own patch of dirt that they look after, and sharing good ideas on how we can do that will usually be greeted with enthusiasm.
So thanks for the good post, and thanks to Annie for a very useful link too.
I especially like the wild foods and forest gardening concepts! Looking out the kitchen and lounge room windows, I can confirm that my own neglected winter garden is looking very wild and foresty - and remarkably productive!
Well I have only ever tried one particular strain of mushrooms from the "wild forest", and I must say, they were "Magic" ;D ;D ;D ;D
lol, Many decades have passed since those days, and I am afraid I would not do that now for fear of ending up, down a rabbit hole from which I would struggle to find my way out.
It has left me with a personal, and permanent revulsion for the taste of mushrooms.
Great subject! I enjoy growing plants myself.  I could easily become self sufficient, since I am vegetarian.
LOL...I draw the line at tasting wild mushrooms and I could happily go vegetarian, if I didn't enjoy the taste of meat...
I dabbled with Vegetarianism when I was a very young man, but I had the problem of not knowing how to cook properly yet, as well as not really enjoying vegetables.
After 18 months, which include five months in hospital, I discovered the Coco Pops alone, is not a well rounded diet.
I resigned myself to the fact that as much as I would like to be kind to animals, I do like eating meat, a lot, so I abandoned my vege aspirations and became an omnivore again.
LOL...the ailing Coco Pops Kid - but I do hope that the hospitalisation aspect of your little story isn't true...
I'd love to be a vegetarian but I love eating meat.
I do try to eat fish every 2nd day instead of beef or chicken etc.
Onya Bobby!
I like to eat fish but I rarely cook it - can't stand the smell, slime, scales and bones...
You get it out of a can, all you need is a good can opener, and remember who keeps the best and rejects the rest....someone in my family just said 'canned fish - grose', aaah! you can't please everyone.
Speaking of vegetables, smelly flesh and bones...I promised the boys that I'd transform the some of the contents of the garden, fridge and pantry into a hearty soup today...
Since things are quiet on here, methinks I have no excuse but to terminate my creative avoidance and hit the kitchen...
LOL...I too keep a few cans of fish at the ready - No.2 son likes tuna for lunch, No.1 son tolerates tuna in an omelete, we all like salmon and potato rissoles and I'm uniquely partial to a hot tuna salad...
I have at least 2 cans of Sirena 185g tuna every week.
It's yummy. :P
