On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:12
Therefore all things
whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
But does Matthew 7:12 mean, that if i wilfully murder [or
recklessly kill] someone's son, or, if i violently rape someone's daughter, that i should expect mercy from the victims family???
Personally, i would see no 'fault' in that.
i.e.
I would not [personally] object, if the victims family
sincerely wanted to extend mercy, and
chose to forgive the criminal.
BUT, imo, mercy for a criminal, should not be 'imposed' [by our courts] upon the rest of the community and upon the victims family, often disregarding the wishes of the victims family.
And that is what not infrequently happens within our 'justice system' today.
When murderers [or those who cause death through their own recklessness] are often released from prison after less than 8-10 years.
If someone murdered someone i loved, i would not want the murderer released into the community again, ever.
Let potential murderers beware!
