I'm sure it's a good show in it's own way, but I take umbrage at the twisting of the rules that this show employs.
I mean, we all know the rules: Garlic, crucifix, sunlight, a stake through the heart, a silver bullet (oh that one's a werewolf isn't it?).
If they're going to create a show with different characteristics, then why call them vampires?
Vampires have already been invented, so why try to make people believe in different rules?
It would be like trying to tell devout christians that Jesus did a whole load of other stuff which has never been discovered until now. ..Oh well, a good proportion of christians would probably believe in that too wouldn't they?   ::)

For mine, I'm sorry but the rules have already been set for vampires. Create another character if you like, but don't ride on the name "vampire".

The only thing 'Vampire' about the recent surge of Vampire activity is the MARKETING.
We know this because yes, like Amadd said, these modern 'Romance' Vampires go against everything that the original consideration of Vampires were. For starters, these 'American' Vampires ...love.
Real Vampires don't love, thats why they are Vampires - cold and dead.

American Vampire is so full of crap that is just blantant marketing tsunami.
European Vampire is real, evil, loveless and for character Vampire.

I would say something about the Australian Vampire, but my marriage is rooted because I got bitten in the back seat of my car with a Vampire Romance writer. Now, I only have alcohol to keep me company. :(

I think that Jasignature raises a good point there.
I probably take umbrage at this new "improved" breed of vampire because they are very much more relative to ourselves.
But that's not what a vampire is supposed to be about. As Jasignature said, they are cold and dead. They are something completely seperate from ourselves.

IMO, let's keep the distinction. Vampire = cold and dead. We know the rules already.

We don't need to associate ourselves with the non-human...or with jews.

Exactly!
First it was Anne Rice with her semi-romantic Interview with a Vampire and now its Meyers with Twighlight etc.
I'm on a Writing Forum and I can't believe the explosion of Vampire Romance. You only have to go into a Bookshop and see an entire section dedicated to the stuff and Young Adult Vampire Fiction.
I admit - its the biggest money making scheme the Publishing Industry has (rivals the Golden Age of Science Fiction and later Fantasy). Just about every female writer I know is doing Vampire Romance and it really is paying off.

But I just can't get my head around this corruption of the Vampire state of being as created by Bram Stoker (in an incredibly terribly written novel). :-? ::)

I think its more like VHS & Betachord. VHS was the UK and Betachord was German. Betachord was far superior quality compared to VHS but the UK knew how to MARKET their product better internationally.
Mind you, the UK is nealry dominated by Service Providers (Sales/Marketing, etc) - that now that people ain't "buying" luxuries - the UK is finding it tough indeed.

Vampire needs more DEATH in its existence.
I was thinking about writing "Batman V Dracula: Batter Up - a Fish and Chip story.  :D :P

I finally figured out why the Twilight books hit a heart of popularity.

Because the vamps ARE ourselfves. Or elves. I can't spell ploperly, I'm soggy.

It almost seems a slight or simple eVolution of humankind, to recognise the darker aspect of our selves is our lover, or our-S-elves..
