"It's an historic..." She got it very, very wong.

When the following word starts with a vowel sound, it's "an". When it's a consonant, it's "a".

Is this thread number three from this moron?

Is it no more than three in any 24 hour period or does it start from midnight?

Let's not censor matty.  After all, the guy is so delusional it brings champagne comedy to this forum.

Allen would be pleased.

That's funny, Alan is on from 5.30 to 9am, so how could this be from him when she said it at about noon?  :-?

Making slight changes to an Allen joke doesn't make it your own.

Hey matty, do you get up at 5am and run to the radio like a kid running to the christmas tree?

You're so sure of this, so you must have evidence. I'm waiting.

Right, if you can't even give any evidence, then why should I bother with you?

Agreeing with someone does not equal being a clone.

Not willing to look at evidence when it is presented to you does not mean I didn't provide it.

Having identical opinions on EVERYTHING does mean you are a clone, Allen clone.

We all hope it's number three. It doesn't have much to say if it wastes the daily limit on trash topics like this.

How's Alan Matty? Do you want to hear a funny joke about Alan? It's about London and public lavatory's. I've never liked the word lavatory, I think toilet is a much nicer word....don't know why.

But you are just a mindless dribbler. You have no opinion you repeat others and really if we want to talk about mangling language lets look at the opposition. You need to grow up and understand what is happening instead of taking the word of a proven liar like Jones as gospel. :) :)

Nothing sounds more affected as well as awkward than the "an" in front of "history" because, the "history" sounds the "h" (unlike in "honour" where the "h" is silent).

However, try to convince our arrogant academics, those still confused when using the nominative"I" and objective "me".

Yep, but these did go to some university - so there!

A historic is more common in online writing, but both usages are sufficiently common to be considered correct.

A well known grammar rule says that we should use an before vowel sounds; for example, an accident, an item, an hour. We use a otherwise: a book, a hotel, a university.

Notice that we say an hour, not a hour. The choice of a or an is based upon the sound of the word, not the spelling. Hour sounds as if it starts with a vowel sound (ow); hence, we use an.

Following this rule, we would say a historic, not an historic because (for most speakers) historic doesn't start with a vowel sound.

Words of three or more syllables that start with h are treated differently by some speakers, though. (This may be because of the tendency of some regional accents to drop initial Hs.)

Here's another example. Which of these pairs of sentences sounds better to you?

We can't agree on a hypothesis.
We can't agree on an hypothesis.

A quick bit of Googling reveals that — as of December 2008 — the phrase a hypothesis is used on 2.22 million pages (80%), and an hypothesis on 538,000 pages (20%). Similarly, a historic gets 70% of the popular vote, and an historic only 30%.

There is a clear preference on the web in favour of a hypothesis and a historic. Even so, a significant minority uses the other form. This supports the view that both forms are widespread. Which form you use seems to be little more than a personal preference and perhaps a matter of accent.

In summary: A historic is more common in online writing, but both usages are sufficiently common to be considered correct.

"Jones" a "liar"?

Aren't you confusing Allan with our honourable PM, girl-donkey Gillard?

I've never caught Alan Jones lying but if he had, at least he managed to do so expertly unlike Gillard's "There'll be no carbon tax under the government I lead"

That lie alone - a dangerous lie, would earn her a prison, if not a death sentence, overseas.

but then, we, Australians are so forgiving of commos, Fabians, rats and germs.

Well Phony Tony had better be careful where he travels - he is the biggest liar of all - he even admits it. That's because on Sundays George Pell forgives him all his sins. So he loads up his magazine full of lies and bullsh1t for another week, spraying his bullsh1t at the Australian Public until next Sunday when George forgives him again. What a lurk!  :D

By the way Old Sod, Turnbull refers to the carbon price as an ETS (Q&A, ABC Monday 7th). The legislation passed is the same as NZ's ETS. You're not paying the carbon price, 500 companies are. There is not "carbon tax" on the Australian public. And no individual Australian pays an ETS.

The bullsh1t and hysteria all comes down to one man. Your King of Liars, Tony Abbott.

Note to Matty: I would suggest that you ought to focus on less petty things, if you are to have some hope of realising your political ambitions.

That said, since Matty has raised the topic, most of us could probably think of a number of pollies who pronounce "industrial relations" and/or "nuclear" incorrectly!

There's probably even a few who say "aksk" instead of ask and "pacific" instead of "specific" - and a great many who wouldn't know their grammar from their grandma.

Both Barnaby Joyce and Joe Hockey have abused the English language somewhat - and there have been at least two very foreign-sounding pollie accents grating on our televisions of late: the Belgium-born Mathias Cormann and the Scotland-born Doug Cameron!

I can't think of any specific grammatical errors to mention right now - but I'm sure that pollies on all sides of politics have delivered a plethora of them over time!

As a result of the LibNat negative campaign, I suspect much of the electorate believe "carbon tax" will be an add on - at the retail point of sale - on every receipt, in the manner of GST

Even wikipedia says the Carbon Price ETS legislation has been "popularly dubbed a Carbon Tax".

I admire the oppostion's ability to hoodwink. I don't admire their ability to spread mistruths because a lot of Australians allow themselves to be sucked in by it.

However this ability to hoodwink is all due to Gillard's in ability to sell her policies - even the demonstrably good ones. As one person said "Gillard could not sell heroin to a junkie".
