Fairfax radio quotes a West Australian newspaper reporter as saying the drug-addicted former AFL star was taken by ambulance to the suburban mental health unit on Friday.

The 33-year-old was admitted on Monday to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in the city, but was on Friday afternoon transferred to the Joondalup Mental Health Care Unit.

Fairfax says Cousins had apparently been displaying paranoid behaviour while being treated after hitting his head in a fall.

Cousins was one of the most decorated West Coast Eagles players, winning the 2005 Brownlow Medal and playing in their 2006 premiership side before the club sacked him in late 2007 because of his drug addiction.

He was suspended for 12 months by the AFL for bringing the game into disrepute before ending his playing career with the Richmond Tigers in 2010.

He welcomed his first child, Bobby Ernest Cousins, with partner Maylea Tinecheff in September.

It is understood Cousins was committed to the hospital's psychiatric unit for his own safety, The West Australian newspaper reported.

The paper says Cousins was taken by ambulance under a police escort to the Joondalup Health Campus mental health unit on Friday after a prolonged psychosis related to his battle with drug addiction.

Doctors treating Cousins, committed the 33-year-old after he showed no sign of improvement following more than four days in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.




how tragic is this... we have two fine young men Mathew Newton..and Cousins total wrecks through drugs.. I just hope this is highlighted! as painful as it will be for their families.. but this need to be out there to show the uselessness and the real damage drugs can cause..we highlight their careers and tend to hide this

I dont know which came first...the mental illness or the drugs but I do know 2 very talented young men have been bought down by crippling mental illness and addiction.
I wish them and their families well.

do you think it should be out there though adel???..like I do..both these young men have a huge talent..whether drugs helped that talent we will never know.. but we do know it has assisted their present situation.. complete break down..from which there may be no return.

these are celebrities and we hear about them what about all the others that are dying just the same.

my sons partners younger brother is in jail..his mind has gone by the sound of things.. his mum has visited him for 4 years and seen no improvement at all he barely speaks..hes 30 he has one more year and then WHAT...how m any other like that out there????

I agree..this sort of thing should have maximum publicity because its only the tip of the iceburg.

Mental health is very difficult for some families to deal with. There is an attitude that it does not happen to us. It is a pity as many young people with mental health problems fall into drugs and this only compounds the problem for them. I have seen this in my own family but even getting on the straight and narrow for many years and building a successful career and family did not help when the next bout of illness arrived. No drugs this time but just the same psychotic behaviour.  It is so heart breaking to my Aunty who feels helpless.

the young man I talk of was about 13/14 when he started on smoking..no sign of mental illness at all..just peer pressure and the usual easy to get..

sorry to hear about your family member drugs could of course have compounded his/her mental fragility we cover up too much and this I feel should stop.. if they had diabetes or asthma it wouldnt be covered up... stop the rot..

we tell some terrible stories about what can happen if you smoke cigarettes.. well lets hear these stories as well.

This was my cousin and she was behaving unpredictably as a teenager but no drugs, that came later when at uni when she totally flipped. Some was pressure but no doubt the pot was a push factor. That was 15 years ago now and then last year it started again but no drugs this time. Mental health problems are in my family we have a "mad one" in every generation so luckily we were aware of the issue.
Studies have shown that if you have a mental health problem pot can trigger a psychotic episode. The study was done in Melbourne and showed mental health patients with drug problems had more complications with their condition than those that did not use drugs. Wish i could find the link it was good reading.

I’ve had more properties than little Benny Cousins will have in a lifetime, but none came from scrounging of the publics money through sport, drugs or my association with gangsters.  They all came form hard work, something Cousins wouldn’t know about - he’s too busy ingesting drugs, smacking his woman around; ignoring his child and skylarking with lowlifes.

I'd bet almost no one knows the kind of 'seedy people' Cousins knows... And knows well. Wouldn't mention names, but if you know Perth well enough, you'll know the people I'm referring to.

When you choose a profession that makes you a public figure, you choose the media attention you get when you step beyond the coffin narrow constraints both the media and public assign to you. Do you think it came as a surprise to Cousins that his personal life would become a matter of public interest given the life he chose and the underworld figures he was happy to be seen publicly with?

I feel for family and friends that have to sit by and watch this unfold..at least they could get some satisfaction of having this out in the open.  where it MIGHT and I said MIGHT stop others following in this direction..

thats what i meant by waste..seeing someone in this state would have to be the most scary thing ever..yet we hide it away..its reality sadly.. yet we pretend its not going on.... for godsakes its happening everyday..but its isnt untill it affects someone like this that we hear about it.. then its shut up real quick..

if he was going round chopping people up we would hear about it..
