Abbott under fire for Italian shipwreck joke

Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is under fire after joking about the cruise liner disaster in which at least 11 people died off the Italian coast.

More than 20 people are still missing after the ship ran aground on rocks off the island of Giglio last Friday, and specialist divers are using explosives to blow holes in the hull in a desperate hunt for any survivors.

During an interview on Triple M radio in Adelaide this morning, Mr Abbott made light of the situation.

"This is a bit from left field mate, the captain of the Costa Concordia wants to know if you need any help with your boat policy?" the Triple M announcer said.

"Well, that was one boat that did get stopped, wasn't it," Mr Abbot replied, to laughter.

*SIGH*

Who exactly is he 'under fire' from?

Quote:
Federal Labor MP Rob Mitchell was quick to pounce on the remarks on Twitter.

"Can't believe Abbott made his childish boat jokes about the #CostaConcordia disaster when people died & are still missing," he tweeted.

"He must come out and apologise."

Pissweak attempt at feigned outrage.  No surprise veg lapped it up.

It's not particularly funny - but hey it was the radio anouncer who inititaied the "joke."
Can't see how it's a 'gaffe' on Abbo's part.

Fair enough :)

OK, to give a fuller answer... sounds like the announcer asked a stupid question looking for a stupid answer.

And Tony fell for it.

But then I wouldn't expect anything else from Tony. I guess it could be news on a slow day but it really doesn't tell us anything new about him. It just confirms he's not PM material.

Title: Abbott Laughs @ Boat Disaster's Dead
Post by Greens_Win on Jan 20th, 2012 at 12:00pm
Is this really the man Australians are considering as their next leader?

http://www.smh.com.au/national/abbott-cruise-ship-joke-lacks-judgment-20120120-1q9cp.html

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has dropped a verbal lead balloon during a morning radio exchange regarding the Costa Concordia disaster, saying: "Well, that was one boat that did get stopped."

The comment about the sinking of the Italian cruise ship came during an interview yesterday morning on the Adelaide Triple M breakfast show with Ali Carle, Dale Lewis and Warren Tredrea.

At one point during the interview, one of the hosts asked Mr Abbott: "This is just a bit from left field, the captain from the Costa Concordia wants to know if you need any help with your boat policy?"

"Well that was one boat that did get stopped, wasn't it," Mr Abbott replied, to laughter.

The accident involving the Concordia, which struck a reef off the Tuscany coast in Italy last Friday, left at least 11 people dead, 64 injured, and more than 3200 evacuated. As many as two dozen people remain missing.

This morning, Victorian Labor MP Rob Mitchell called on Mr Abbott to apologise for the comment.

"He has no boundaries and lacks judgment," Mr Mitchell said.

"You have 11 people that are dead and at least 20 people missing and he is using this tragedy to make a tasteless joke. It shows he is unfit to be leader."

Comment is being sought from Mr Abbott, who is this morning riding in a bicycle cancer charity event in South Australia.

Abbott is a clown, and not a man with a fast brain, obviously.

I know we have all sort of accepted the perpetually lowering standards from our pollies, but I can't think of any former leader, who would not have just responded that trying to make light of either refugee issues, or recent events where loss of life was the outcome, is a poor choice for attempted humour.
That is what ANY decent person would have done, and Tony Abbott's obsession to try and appear more likeable, just further shows how unfit for the top job he is.

Maybe Tony just can't think on the run.

Maybe, just maybe, he needs to be accompanied by a script writer everywhere he goes.

A non issue.....Tony Abbott is a good Christian who responded to a light hearted question in a light hearted manner.....I am sure he did not mean to upset anyone with his comments and just saw it as an opportunity to highlight the failed asylum seeker policies of the Gillard Government and the total irrelivance of the Greens party.....Abbott is not responsible for the boats sinking!!!

Under fire from the wowsers you mean, in which case they are ignored anyway.
It is clear that Abbotts response to an FM morning radio host's remark is nothing more than light hearted banter.
Two teaspoons of C-ment in your morning cocoa for a week will harden you up Precious, and make you a little less sensitive to an off the cuff remark. :)

There are plenty of jokes about the Costa Concordia going around Italy at the moment too.

Quote:
The captain of the Costa Concordia claims he is not guilty of homicide and has witnesses to prove he was nowhere near the passengers who died.

Ok, it doesn't translate well.

Q) Whats the quickest way off an Italian Cruise ship?

A) Follow the captain

Q) How are your drinks served on an Italian cruise liner?

A) On the rocks

When our captain faces court he will be in the dock
Which is more than we can say for his ship.

Did you hear about the Scotsmen that the divers found still at the bar of the Costa Concordia?

Their reply? -  F- off - we paid for "all inclusive"

Then there was the visitor to the Bridge who asked Schettino if he knew where he was going. He replied:

"Yes, off course"

It's the only cruise ship where the sauna is cold and the pool is at 90 degrees.

"This is the captain speaking. - On your left, you can see the beautiful stars of the Tuscan sky. On your right, you can see the ancient shipwrecks of antiquity.

The Restaurant of the Costa Concordia offers a wide range of side dishes.
