Circumcision is good for you, say local experts

THE ban on circumcision of boys in many public hospitals has come under fire from 12 medical experts, who say the latest evidence from around the world shows the procedure reduces risk of infections, cancer and painful conditions.

More than 80 per cent of Australian boys are uncircumcised, exposing them to significantly higher risk of urinary tract infections in childhood and in later life to other diseases including prostate cancer, and in their female partners cervical cancer, their study finds.

The research leader, a Sydney University professor of medicine, Brian Morris, said the study was the most comprehensive assessment of international evidence on the issue yet undertaken. ''The evidence in favour of infant circumcision is now so strong that advocating this … procedure for baby boys is about as effective and safe as childhood vaccination.''

The conclusion challenges the practice of many paediatricians and the policy of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. After reviewing the available evidence, the college declared in 2010 that the level of protection offered by circumcision and its complication rates did not warrant routine infant circumcision. But Professor Morris dismisses that view as ''blinkered ideology''.

The new study says that factors discouraging the procedure probably included biased information given to young parents, the ban on the procedure in most public hospitals in Australia and the low Medicare rebate, which made it unaffordable for low-income families.

Among authors of the study are several professors of medicine, including public health expert Stephen Leeder and HIV expert Professor David Cooper.

Their report presents a risk-benefit analysis of circumcision. It shows that in uncircumcised infants, the risk of urinary tract infection and kidney inflammation is 10 times higher than for circumcised boys. In later life, risk of prostate cancer and penile cancer is higher, and for HIV and syphilis three to eight times higher. For the female partner of an uncircumcised male, the risk of cervical cancer is four times higher.

Professor Morris says that in contrast to the comments of opponents, ''the scientific evidence shows no adverse effects on sexual function, sensitivity, satisfaction or sensation, if anything the opposite''.

''It is now up to state governments to ensure that bans on elective infant male circumcision in public hospitals are lifted without delay. And it is essential that the federal government revises the Medicare rebate so that this procedure is … affordable.''

It can be argued that there are some health benfits to be gained from male circumcision.  Please note, however, in saying that I am not saying that I agree with the practice.  I personally consider it to be a barbaric leftover from previous centuries when standards of cleanliness were nowhere near what they are today.

I'm sure there are other things you could lop off and justify this with someone finding a benefit of some kind. But in the interests of equity I would call it genital mutilation for both genders.

Well having done Aged Care where I had to clean many a penis of an 'old fella' and being circumcised myself.

I think babies and boys tend to have 'Mummy' around to keep the the infections away, whereas many an Old Fella find it hard to look after themselves.
Not every Old Fella is 'incapable' though.
So I would suggest 'circumcision' is set for the Old Fellas.

The other benefit of being circumcised is that we get starring roles in Porn Films as women hate the taste of cheese.

Saw many a young teenager male come in for circumcision operations due to infections - very painful after those ops for them.

In truth though, I think the un-circumcised penis was a part of life in the Primate to Caveman stage where it was left open to the elements.
But like the appendix - it is now useless and a potential for disaster.
So I guess - yes, Circumcision should be endorsed after birth and not just for Religious reasons.
Prevention is better than a cure.

The author of Islamqa, Sheikh Muhammed Salih al-Munajjid is quoting somebody else here. It is not his own opinion and is not based on the Quran or prophetic tradition. It is merely the opinion of a gynaecologist. This should be made clear as the author has written:

If you read the whole page it makes it clear that female circumcision is not obligatory in Islam:

Cutting the clitoral hood is like cutting the foreskin on of a male. The clitoral hood is homologous to the male foreskin, eg. they are the same on the foetus before sexual differentiation begins.

Cutting the clitoral hood has the same effect as cutting the foreskin on males. It helps maintain cleanliness and gives helps people more self control.

While the clitoris and the penile glans may become more desentised by being exposed, they remain fully functioning organs. Both the clitoral hood and the foreskin are superfluous skin, and the human body can function fully with the superfluous skin removed.

As long as the clitoris itself is not removed the woman should be able to experience full sexual satisfaction. However, to remove the clitoris would be like removing the glans of the penis in the male and should not be done. This is done in Africa, but in recent many programs have been developed to educate women about how this is harmful and is not required by religion.

Depends which way you mean. In Africa, the Pharaonic circumcision is a tradition believed to have been born in ancient Egypt, and coninued from those times until today. The Pharaonic circumcision involves removing all external genitalia; the labia, clitoris and clitoral hood. This sort of thing is actually advised against in Islam, and in recent times educational programs have been established in Africa to advise women agaisnt this.

I would agree with you that the African pharaonic circumcision is butchery, and it should be stopped because it is harmful to both the woman and her husband.

There is a different type of circumcision that involves removing the flap of skin that hangs over the clitoris. To remove this flap of skin is the same as removing the foreskin in the male. This procedure causes no harm to the woman, and she remains fully functional.

Is the circumcision of men done in order to keep men subjugated. If you had read my post earlier, the removal of the prepuce/clitoral hood does not prevent a woman from receiving pleasure from intercourse. The clitoral hood is a fold of skin covering the actual clitoris. It does not serve much purpose. There are thousands of nerve endings in the clitoris itself, and as long as it is not cut off, a woman should be fully functional and experience sexual satisfaction.

Yes, my frien, may our dear sister Soren explain what experience her husband has facilititing her clitoral hood removal.

Did he comfort you, dear? Does he give you much pleasure? You must be grateful for increased beauty and hygeine benefits of the proceedure.

I will just play devil's advocate.
Asuming the male circumcision/mutilation "benefits" have been the subject of clinical studies. These have resulted in claims as to causation of health problems including urinary tract infections and even cancer.
I am unaware of any scientific clinical studies that look into the health benefits comparing circumcised/mutilated females with those who have not had the proceedure in regard to the incidence of thrush, yeast infection, urinary tract infection and cancer experience.
So is it that there is just an agenda here?

It wasnt really about the STD's but that every option has it dangers.

I'm circumcised, when I asked my parents why, they said because it was the done thing....When my son was born my wife and I agreed not to circumcise. I've read nothing here to indicate that that was a mistake...

My grandad, on his 15th birthday went into the city to have all his teeth removed and get fitted for dentures. Why? because teeth are dirty bacteria hosting food traps that can cause severe gum disease and oral cysts, that, could lead to blood poisoning and death...Back then, it made sense, today? I don't think so.

P.S If my son at 18 decides he'd rather be circumcised, well, he's free to go get it done...

There are arguments both ways. There can be severe complications due to a botched circumcision operation (see picture below)  ;D , and without circumcision there is a greater chance of infection for those who neglect their personal hygiene for one reaon or another.

There may be cases where circumcision is more warranted, such as a tight prepuce which in itself can lead to a greater risk of infection and less sensitivity (less pleasurable sex), but there are other remedies such as steroid creams and  in the case of a tight frenulum (which is a frequent cause of tight prepuce), frenuloplasty (snip!) is probably a better option. The frenulum is the tissue that connects the prepuce to the underside of the penis. If it's too short, it can make cleaning difficult.  (By the way there is another "frenulum", called the lingual frenulum which connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth) 

The general consensus seems to be that the risks outweigh the benefits, particularly as there are other solutions available. The downside is that men are generally very reluctant to see a doctor about anything related to that and will put up with it.

How would the belief that a circumcised penis protects the owner from AIDS help in reducing the spread of AIDS? Sounds like a double edged sword to me. There are already enough problems in Africa with silly superstitions about STDs that actually make the situation worse. With options like condoms, monogamy, etc available the real benefit in fighting AIDS is likely to be non-existent.

I was born overseas to an Australian mother. The day after my birth my mum requested I be circumsised. That request caused cries of "Jude! Jude!" and my mum was promptly dragged out of bed, dressed and I was then thrust into her ams as she was pushed out onto the street  It took about 30 mins before my dad arrived on the scene from work to sort it all out and I was returned to the nursery and my mum back to her hospital bed.

So the difference is negligible if the person does not pick up STDs and has good personal hygeine? Would you be happy having sex with someone who engages in unprotected sex knowing that your risk of infection is reduced because they are circumcised?

Female 'Mutilation' is a stupid abusive act from sexually insecure males who use Religion to hide their fears and inabilities behind. When a woman wants to 'breed' - not even as lack of orgasm or pleasure will stop her from attaining that sperm. The need of a child goes far more deeply within the soul of a woman than pleasure does. Just as a young female experiences her first menstruation and physcially develops into a woman - a very life changing experience.

Young boys experience a 'mental' change in their development towards manhood (Circumcision at the age of 12 for Aboriginal boys is not really the right way to go about it. Hence why a 40,000 year old 'stagnated' culture) - also a very life changing experience.

Karnal, obviously failed to recognise this development in himself and lacks the ability to see the error of his ways.
