Title: MARGARET WHITLAM DIES - Nation grieves but not me
Post by red baron on Mar 17th, 2012 at 8:04am
Strange title for a subject but today I finally got 'the monkey off my back' a story that I have been carrying inside of me of all my life and one in which I will now have closure.

This is the first time I have aired this story outside of my family.

Many years ago my Dad collapsed at work. He was diagnosed with being seriously ill with diabetes. So ill was he he could not continue to go to work.

My father was senior in years but  not of pension age. My beautiful and gentle Mum was forced to go and see Margaret Whitlam who was in charge of assessing applications for an early age pension.

That woman treated my dearest Mother like a pariah and humiliated  her before finally throwing the the crumbs of the pension.

It was one of the worst episodes in our family's  life and one I will never forgive the true pariah in the matter Margaret Whitlam for.

She will be grieved by a Nation today but not by me.

I finally have closure after all these years.

Who was the government of the day responsible for the crummy pension?

Responsible for the policy and the pension of the day...it sounds like it was Menzies.

Who, but Gough would have appointed his wife to assess such pensions? No doubt she was acting by the rules however, she could have been more gentle with red baron's mother.

It was a different time, but the Prime Minister's wife personally assessing pensions doesn't seem likely.

Idiot. . .

Why would Menzies had appointed Margaret Whitlam for the job?

As for pensions, well, there are countries that don't give pensions where, if there are no children to take care of their aged parents, they die.

As I've grown during the Great Depression, I was brought up to live within my means and am grateful for any support.

Surely the job would've be carried out by an officer of the public service not a special appointee.

In 2006 she courted controversy by refusing to apologise to Janette Howard, the wife of then prime minister John Howard, after calling her useless.

A biography of Ms Whitlam quoted her as saying Mrs Howard failed to carry out the obligations of a prime minister's wife.

"She is useless in terms of how little she really gives the community," she said in the book.

"She doesn't even go to the old people's homes that Howard visits. The only thing she goes to is big, public things.

"I fear she's a steely woman. Never contributing anything else but a smile. Nor a grin - a grin indicates some sense of humour."

What a bitter twisted woman Margaret Whitlam  was.

Must be labor party policy.

To those who have given sympathy I say thank you. To clarify a point, I didn't say that Gough Whitlam was P.M. at the time. I don't think he was.

It happened exactly as I have said. I have no reason to lie, nor an ulterior motive to bend the truth or lie.

All I can say is that sorry episode has hurt me over the years and now the cause of it is dead.

At the beginning of her career, Margaret Whitlam worked at the Family Welfare Bureau, graduating in 1948 with a degree in social work from Sydney University. From 1964 to 1967 she served as a hospital social worker.  If the events you are talking about relate to this period, surely any decisions made by a person in her position would of necessity have to satisfy the requirements set by the relevant department which would, in turn, have been dictated by government policy.  While I sympathise with you for what happened to your father, I feel you are blaming the wrong person.  You really should be blaming the government of the day for having unsatisfactory social welfare policies.  Therefore, the cause of your grief has probably been dead for years.

You may have no reason to lie, but oral family history can be notoriously unreliable. You must have been very young at the time to not know who the Prime Minister of the day was.

You are right - she wouldn't have worked on when the first lady but probably before Gough became PM.

Someone blamed the pension policies of Menzies but one must remember that it wasn't Menzies' money - he just distributed what was in the coffers and there were always the Olive Twists.

Yes, and I was wrong, hadn't digested the post properly before answering.

At the time of the incident. Mrs Whitlam would not have had a high profile position - probably just a clerk in a welfare department and merely followed set out rules.

I will repeat that one can officiate nicely.

It wasn't what questions she asked of mother, rather her superior and humiliating way she made my mother feel in asking for Government Assistance in the first time in her life.

Margaret Whitlam kicked my mother whilst she was down, she was a rotten bitch of a woman, a social climber and a snob.

My mother was a very caring gentle soul, I can't ever remember her losing her temper. I remember her being shocked at the treatment Margaret Whitlam dolled out to her.

Goodbye and good riddance Margaret!

Besides the fact no one cares about you or your mother, you know nothing of Whitlam.  Margeret Whitlam was no "social climber" her father was a judge, and you're a bitter old fool that should learn some manners, pity your mother didn't teach you any.

Anyone who acts superior and humiliates another is one who ISN'T superior, in fact, is often insecure.

Margaret was not beautiful and maybe that's all she had going for her, the mien of superiority.

However, I remember her with some respect for being polite to Tamara Fraser. I seem to remember the pair having a golf game!

Skippy - You poor deceived bloody idiot. Take off the rose coloured glasses and take a piece of life in the raw, offered in good faith for once in your miserable biased existence.

People like you are waste of space.

Incidentally Skippy, I WOULD NEVER EVER SAY that about a member of your family, no matter how aggrieved I felt towards you.

It is a badge you wear, as to the calibre of a person you are, to say such a monstrous thing.

I totally respect the people on this site, even the ones with opposite opinions  however,

And now  the 'sickos'  and the 'psychos' on this blog are now lining up to take cheap shots at my family this will be my last post on the matter.

That is a different matter entirely to the nature of the situation I posted on this site.

All I can say to those sick bastards is, it is fine to have an opinion but to take cheap shots, is as low as you can go, I pity you poor sick bastards because you don't have any soul.

You can fire away at me all day long if you like, I have broad shoulders but to go after someone whom you know nothing at all about is sick...really f.........g sick!

And if you think that there is no difference between what I said about Whitlam and what you are spewing up then you haven't got a brain in your head.

skippy is in the lastnail mold - a thoroughly unpleasant person on which the planet wastes oxygen. even those i oppose on here are far more pleasant than these two total creeps.

Margaret Whitlam wasnt known for her gifts of mercy and compassion. being mean-spirited at the time was probably a very unpleaseant experience. just as the 3 years of her husbands govt were unpleasent for the rest of us.

red baron may have chosen the wrong time and place to air the grievance of his mother, but if M.Whitlam did treat his mother in such a manner, and I do not doubt it, it  would have been the duty of M Whitlam or any other public servant to treat her with respect, although she had to apply the rules of the department.
M Whitlam lived a long life, but just being a wellknown person, I don't consider her passing away any more important than I would for any member of this forum.
I received some treatment from some ex-politicians which was atrocious and I think the Hon. before many of their name is a great misnomer, no matter which side of politics they come from.

What has anyone said about your family, idiot? I said they should have taught you manners, and anyone reading your bile would agree. You, on the other hand have come in here and called the former PMs wife a " bitch" and written such bile as good riddance, on the very day she died, you are the lowest form of a human being.

red baron may have chosen the wrong time and place to air the grievance of his mother, but if M.Whitlam did treat his mother in such a manner, and I do not doubt it, it  would have been the duty of M Whitlam or any other public servant to treat her with respect, although she had to apply the rules of the department.
M Whitlam lived a long life, but just being a wellknown person, I don't consider her passing away any more important than I would for any member of this forum.
I received some treatment from some ex-politicians which was atrocious and I think the Hon. before many of their name is a great misnomer, no matter which side of politics they come from.

Which pollies have been atrocious to you? Overall, great post. I agree, that title is the most redundant, useless and pathetic title. The 'honourable Julia Gillard? Please...

I should not name any here, but I will: Elizabeth Harvey, Chris Gallus, John Trainer and a Union leader Rex Phillips. I have suffered now for almost 25 Years from an injury at work, due a saftey pedal on trains which was ergonomically wrong, and none of this people would do anything to force the Health and Safety Authority to force the employer which was The State transport authority of SA to rectify the problem.

[highlight Besides, you  need at least half a brain to add to debate here, something a troll like you sadly lack. [/highlight]

The debating skills of roopoo.

"What a stupid retarded smacking post, you're an idiot."

"If Carr joined the gov it was in a SENATE seat ,moron, not a house of reps. Fair dinkum, it amazes me how morons like you manage to wipe your ass. When a senator from either side resigns their position is replaced by the gov of the state they represent, dog you're stupid."

"longwinded ,another little pissant trying to look adequate. "

"Even Abbott admits Labor had a mandate to introduce it, and they would have, had HE not blocked it, what an arrogant little prick"

Now what was that half a brain comment roopoo?

If you don't respect someone when they are alive why the hell would you respect them when they are dead?

That is hypocrisy, and I was taught not to be a hypocrite.

WOW you had to go a long way back to find that,I've noticed you tend to that  with most of the quotes you pull out, just shows how hard it is to make ME look as SAD as YOU. That one above ALMOST makes me look as sad as you, longwhine and red baron,WELL ALMOST, cods is still breathing and able to answer back, unlike the old lady you three  dissed on the day she died.

Frances I have broken my own veto to answer one person and one person only....you.

I have done the Math and worked out I would have been 12 years old when all this stuff happened; this would have put the incident occurring in 1969.

This fits the picture as far as your depiction of Margaret Whitlam's involvement in Social Services and well before old Gough made it to the Lodge.

It happened exactly as I said it happened in my first post.

I have nothing further to add.

Moving to Cabramatta in 1957, in the heart of Werriwa, Whitlam threw herself into community work, returning to part-time social work at Parramatta Hospital in 1964. With Gough being elevated to Opposition leader three years later, she gave away her job to be able to be more by his side.

Seeing her role at this stage as chief supporter for her husband's rocketing political career, Whitlam started to become more confident in talking to reporters and projecting a personality of her own. Let loose, Whitlam became a political force in her own right.

She campaigned independently in the 1969 campaign and in the three years leading up to 1972 took part in television and radio panels and wrote a column for Woman's Day magazine. Social reforms were high on her agenda and, influenced by Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch, she talked forthrightly about the need for equal pay for women as well as abortion reform.

I'm a little lost here. M Whitlam wasn't within coo-ee of a social security office making decisions on who should get what in 1969.

Did your family try to get benefits from the ALP campaign fund?

One of the things in my family's history is a terrible story about my invalided grandmother. She was in her wheelchair going up Chapel Street one morning when a street gang led by Janette "The Skull" Howard, and Pattie "Iceman" Menzies confronted her. Well, these hooligans were about to take my dear grannie down. Except they didn't bargain on my grandmother having a submachine gun hidden under her blanket. She shot them all dead and was awarded the Iron Cross by President Roosevelt. That was  about 1789 that happened. I remember it was just before my 15th birthday.

They can rot in hell those two women.

As far as I can see I said, and I quote
"I don't care about you or your mother" SO WHAT, I don't care about anyone's mother that I don't know.
" your mother should have taught you manners"
I stand by that, she obviously taught you none. Because the way you carried on about M Whitlam on the day she died you'd be on the ground if you said it in a pub.

I make no judgement on Mrs Whitlam as I never met her. But I find this thread very sad because red baron and his family did not allow Mrs Whitlam the chance to right any wrong she may have done.

None of us are perfect and we all have bad days. This day was obviously a bad day for Mrs Whitlam.

But instead of approaching her, explaining the hurt and giving Mrs Whitlam a chance to say "sorry" red baron instead chose to allow that day to eat into him to such an extent that he attacks a human being only when she cannot answer back.

For me, closure is never obtained by putting the boot into a corpse. Frequently it can only come with forgiveness.

When someone wrongs you, you forgive them not to make that person any happier but to provide for yourself the opportunity to move on.

It is not too late to forgive a person even when they are dead.
