Title: leftards $300M failure
Post by Sprintcyclist on Mar 19th, 2012 at 7:50am

More money wasted by the leftys.

Quote:
LORRAINE Ward has lived in the same house for all of her 70 years, amid a suburb she once proudly described as "beautiful".
Now, she is saddened to admit the bitter truth - her Glebe neighbourhood is "a ghetto".

Her public housing home is a perfect illustration of the inner-city suburbs' quickening deterioration.
When it rains, water runs down the walls of Mrs Ward's laundry, shorting the lights. The water has already caused one dryer to blow up and ruined a washing machine.

She has been complaining for two years, but yesterday the hole in the roof was still there, as were the cracks that circle the ceiling. Mrs Ward is the face of Sydney's secret shame - the deterioration of the city's public housing homes caused by a $300 million backlog in maintenance work.

"My house is perfect compared to some of the others around here," Mrs Ward said. "Glebe used to be a beautiful place but now every second fence is down and it is like a ghetto."Mrs Ward is one of many cases detailed in a frightening dossier of neglect compiled by local Greens MP Jamie Parker, a long list that shows the most vulnerable people in our society - the elderly - are being let down and left to their own devices. "This huge maintenance backlog means demolition by neglect for assets owned by the people of NSW and miserable conditions for some of the most vulnerable in our community," Mr Parker said.

"The maintenance program is a shambles. It's underfunded and disorganised."

Down the road from Mrs Ward in Cowper St, Mary Johnson, 84, and her neighbour Pat Turner, 82, live in a Housing NSW property that is falling apart.

Mrs Johnson moved in 22 years ago when it was a new development. Now her door is bowed, among other things, and she worries it will fall down each time it rains.

"When it rains I can't get out my front door," Mrs Johnson said. "It's sad, when I moved in here it was brand new and it was so beautiful. I couldn't believe it was housing department."

Finance and Services Minister Greg Pearce said reducing the maintenance backlog was a priority and blamed the previous government for failing to maintain properties.

Well, certainly in NSW, this has been going on since LONG before Labor even got in.

Nice try, partisan.

look at the condition of the schools in NSW.. appalling.. not one of them thought about spending all those billions on a new roof.. a decent toilet block.. or heaven forbid aircon.or even security systems that stopped the bloody things being burnt down.

Labor had 16 long, incompetent, wasteful, corrupt, self-serving years to fix this and a myriad of problems. They did not fix anything.

The Aboriginal and department of housing makes part of Glebe a ghetto, i would say it is between Pyrmont bridge rd and Parramatta rd for the Ghetto part of Glebe.

There are many small terrace houses in Glebe owned by the government which are in need of renovation which will be costly.
The government will never recoup the cost of renovating these houses as rent is 25% of the welfare payments for residents.
The Government should sell these terrace houses they will probably get 3/4 million for each of them and put the money into building something else.

Yeah, that bit is pretty ratty looking. I've always suspected that quite a few of those properties have been bought up by developers who are waiting to build something to leverage off the old Grace Bros site and are probably being let out in the meantime as student accommodation.

In any case, I agree that the department would do well to sell off whatever it has around there. They could use the money to build better and more accommodation somewhere else.
