Australian Olympic Committee defends Chinese-made Olympic uniforms

WHEN Australia's athletes march into London's Olympic stadium in July they will be donning uniforms made in China. :(

But the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) says it was not financially viable for the uniform's manufacturer to make the outfits at home. :o

The Sportscraft uniforms, which were unveiled in Sydney on Thursday, feature green jackets with white slacks for men and white knee length skirts for women and white Dunlop volley shoes.

When asked why the AOC had not supported the Australian manufacturing industry and chosen outfits made in China, President John Coates said: "We didn't spend any money, they were a sponsor and they provided this and we had no one else of that quality come forward." :(

"All of the leading designs ... are being manufactured overseas at the moment and the apparel group is not on its lonesome on that," he said.

While not manufactured on Australia's shores, he said the uniforms still included touches from home. :(

"The design was done here and it's going to be sold here.

The new threads have sparked some criticism that athletes look less like Olympians and more like lawn bowlers.

But many of the athletes who are sporting the look, said they were pleased to have had a say in the design and thought the uniforms were a winner.

ADIDAS is under pressure to reveal where Australia's Olympic uniforms are being made following a report into third-world sweatshops. :(

The report, to be released by global labour rights alliance Play Fair today, claims garments with the Olympic symbol are being manufactured in sweatshops in Sri Lanka, China and the Philippines. :(

While there is no evidence Australian uniforms are being made under unethical conditions, Oxfam has called on manufacturer adidas to disclose the exact locations of its factories because its products are made in the same countries highlighted in the report.

"Oxfam is calling on the International Olympics Committee to ensure workers producing sportswear for Australia's Olympic athletes are treated fairly," Oxfam said in a statement. "We want them (IOC) to ensure they do independent audits, which involve the unions, to be able to reassure the Australian public that those garments are not being made in sweatshops." ;)

Kardashians exploit sweatshop labour
THE Kardashians are allegedly profiting from sweatshop labour, paying 16-year-olds as little as $1 an hour. :(

Play Fair researchers visited 10 factories in Sri Lanka, the Philippines and China, interviewing 175 workers last October and December. Their investigation is detailed in a 30-page report obtained exclusively by The Sunday Telegraph.

Adidas denied claims any Australian branded products were being produced by workers under unfair conditions. :-?

"Adidas strongly disputes many of the claims made in Play Fair's report and will of course immediately investigate any others," spokesperson Katja Schreiber said. "Adidas is committed to ensuring fair labour practices."

Australian Olympic Committee spokesman Mike Tancred said it would immediately terminate the contract of any label found to be acting unethically.

US cultural bubble? It's better value to bulk import Chinese athletes with a replacement guarantee for any not winning a Chinese made medal with acrylic strap.

The borlympics have returned. Cannot stand them, a corrupt organisation that leaves each city in a recession afterwards paying for the stupidity of the event. Good luck to you, i don't need corrupt organisations to tell me it is time to wave the flag and have my fun between 2.15 and 2.20 when we win a medal. Life is a magical adventure full of amazing things every day. What's yours?

Don't worry about the leftards, Avram. They're pessimists in regards to everything. Watching people have fun and succeed offends their feelings. It's probably because they were never any good at anything so it's a natural reaction to compensate for their inadequacies by putting everyone down.

It's not about a person's success. The reports are mainly about the viewers' nation, it's medal tally and which nation wins. The Olympics caused all wars to be suspended during the festival. These extravaganza spectaculars are a form of warfare, US wins over China and Russia.
