Title: Do you feel sympathy for Thomson and/or Slipper? Post by john_g on May 25th, 2012 at 12:42pm
Do you feel sorry for either man, on any level? I remember when the news first came out (please excuse the pun) on Slipper, I admitted sympathy for him. The reason is that he was probably repressing his true self for years and years, and trying to cover it all up, although overall, that's no excuse for sexual harassment and/or ripping off tax payers via such means as cab charges.
On the issue of Thomson, however, there is no sympathy on my part. Slipper may have fudged some cab charges, but Thomson actually stole hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of dollars of other people's money, and even worse is that they are some of our lowest payed people in the country. I know that others have pointed to the fact that he doesn't appear to be all there, which does look highly probable, but that doesn't excuse what he's done, and if he is really unfit, then he has the choice to leave. Whether or not he takes it is up to him. This is no one's fault but his own. |

No for both. ALL self-inflicted and ALL their own fault. I know how bad sexual harassment is from personal experience. I see that roo-girl is still just as stupid as ever. Imagine if these two were Liberal or National MPs? He'd be calling for blood.

I have sympathy for neither.
Sympathy is in scant supply in the Hicks camp. You reap what you sow in this world. That goes in my views of everything. If you don't get paid much - tough - this is your own fault for not bother at school and getting the skills required. If you find you are fired in your job - tough - you should performed better. If you go out and meet call girls, charge it to the company/union - which he quite clearly did - then he deserves all that is coming to him. If you are the speaker of the house and you try and touch up another fella. Get out of the chair and get out in generally. Sympathy? I have no concept of it. |

Of course he would not, and members that do share too much of their personal lives are setting themselves up to be targeted by some very weird puppies. Weird puppies can make peoples life a misery, if you give them the opportunity, so the best advice is to not do so, by NOT sharing personal info, beyond anything that is just reasonably social, like what hobbies you like, but NEVER anything that could personally identify you, or more importantly, your families. |

How come the poll only includes independents? There are a few on the Liberal team who have been accused of wrongdoing.
Liberal MP, Mary Josephine Fisher, was convicted of assault, and charged with shoplifting. Liberal MP Geoff Shaw no faces serious accusations of defrauding the state of Victoria. Now he is being investigated over another matter: Liberal MP Geoff Shaw probed over tax debt BESIEGED Liberal MP Geoff Shaw is facing investigation by the tax office amid claims he underpaid debts to mum-and-dad investors who lost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar. Recommended Coverage Shaw fights partner over bills End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. Mr Shaw has been the subject of a 20-month investigation by the Australian Tax Office, which has already established he has short-changed one employee who was paid through a trust fund. The Herald Sun can also reveal the accountant initially underpaid mum-and-dad investors on money owed from a failed investment scheme. A parliamentary investigation into claims he ordered his taxpayer-financed car be used for his hardware business is continuing. The issues, as well as allegations of harassment of his ex-wife, present a major headache for the Baillieu Government, which holds power by a single seat. Documents seen by the Herald Sun reveal the ATO investigation has found the Frankston MP's company, Southern Cross Hardware, did not meet its superannuation obligations to a whistleblower employee. Sources connected to his hardware business and accounting firm claim the companies concealed several employees' payments. Mr Shaw's lawyer, Peter Bartlett, issued a statement yesterday acknowledging the business was "still in discussions" with the ATO over an amount under $1700. "We understand that these discussions are in the nature of commonplace commercial dealings with the ATO," Mr Bartlett said. "Southern Cross has acted appropriately throughout." Several investors have also accused the MP of trying to welch on repaying debts owed to them after they suffered massive losses through investments in a failed scheme he ran. One who lost tens of thousands of dollars said it was only after Mr Shaw's former financial adviser, partner Robert Pearce, blew the whistle on underpayments that Mr Shaw handed over the rest of his money. "When I read he had been voted into State Parliament I almost choked on my Weet-Bix," he said. ...The Liberals also face scrutiny over claims that sources close to the party pressured Mr Shaw's ex-wife not to make formal complaints over domestic issues as recently as eight weeks ago. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-news/liberal-mp-probed-over-tax-debt/story-fn7x8me2-1226366235095 |

Liberal MP accused of not disclosing interests
FEDERAL Liberal MP Craig Kelly has been accused of failing to declare company directorships, including one for a business that went into liquidation... ...the Government said Mr Kelly had failed to declare potential liabilities and possible criminal charges arising from the collapse of his family company of which he was a shadow director... ..."In contempt of the resolution of this house the member had failed to declare the company directorships," Mr Albanese told Parliament. He also said there were reports of Mr Kelly acting as a solicitor while a member of Parliament. Mr Albanese said if Mr Kelly was found not to have reported any income or conflicts of interest, that would be a serious contempt against Parliament... http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/liberal-mp-accused-of-not-disclosing-interests/story-e6frf7jx-1226362414869 |

Sad posts on this thread. I do feel for them both, not because the got caught for that they can suffer but because this has become a very toxic argument over one vote. I heard Mr Abbott tell the biggest lie i have ever heard today. He said it would never happen in a government he leads. A complete lie no two ways about it. I still want to see him as PM with a minority of one vote for 18 months and see how he goes.

Good point angeleyes, he is accused of taking 100k in cash, yet chose to use union branded plastic to pay for prostitutes, instead of the cash he is supposed to have been continually stealing.
No chance the fact that those two facts do not sit logically together means the loony right say he is just a really dumb crook, and refuse to concede even the slightest possibility that he may actually have been set up. |
