Title: ALP Caucus bows to union pressure
Post by Maqqa on May 29th, 2012 at 1:06pm
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-05-29/caucus-backs-motion-on-overseas-workers/4039568

Labor Caucus has passed a resolution ensuring Australian workers are helped to get mining industry jobs after a "passionate" debate in the party room this morning.

Backbenchers have been publicly criticising the Government's decision to allow Gina Rinehart to employ up to 1,700 foreign workers at her Roy Hill project in Western Australia.

The deal also cast a fresh shadow over Ms Gillard's leadership when it was revealed that she was not told about it until she returned to Australia last Wednesday.

One MP described this morning's debate as "passionate" but not "heated".

Ms Gillard is expected to face more questions over the affair in Question Time this afternoon.

Earlier Left faction heavyweight Dough Cameron, one of the backers of this morning's motion, took a swipe at Employment Minister Bill Shorten over the handling of the issue.

Interviewed on Radio National this morning, Mr Shorten said he would prefer to debate the issue inside Caucus rather than "trailing his coat" in public.

But Senator Cameron said he did not regret his public criticism of the deal.

"Well if I get out and get changes for Australian workers so that they can get jobs, the backbench can get out there and make sure migrant workers are looked after - if we can get progress then I'll be trailing my coat many times in the future."

So a good result all round, even if arrived at shambolically.

Which just goes to show that Labor in a shambles is still HEAPS better than a well oiled, tightly run Liberal machine on a fast run to nowhere.  :P

I believe in the trickle down theory...Aussie workers should wait for the gravy to trickle down Gina's chins before they get their slice of the pie  :D

This is silly. Why not rebadge these foreign workers and call them refugees and asylum shoppers, pack them on a few leaky boats and steer them towards Ashmore Reef? We'd have people wading out to Ashmore Reef armed with applications for refugee status etc. Let's bring 'em in via Christmas Island and give them phone cards, prayer rooms etc. What are we worried about?

Pensioners will receive their first carbon price compensation on Monday.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard says single pensioners will receive a one-off payment of $250 and couples $380. The amounts apply to full and part pensions.

"This assistance is there to help people with the flow-through impact of putting a price on carbon," Ms Gillard told reporters in Canberra on Sunday.

From March next year, single pensioners will receive an extra $338 each year, paid at the same time as their normal pension. Couples will receive an extra $510.

Ms Gillard said millions of pensioners will be better off.
Compensation worth $707 million will be paid to pensioners before the carbon price starts on July 1.

Not irrelevant at all, they equivocate being an Australian with their sense of "Britishness" they say one thing...they want to reclaim their country, but really mean they want to preserve their British ties.  Their heart and soul is not Australian - at least half belongs in a foreign land...

No, it's about an incompetent and disfunctional government wanting to bring in overseas workers to do Australian jobs, the Union not being happy about it and the government having to change its mind before all hell breaks loose.
