Post by Greens_Win on Jul 28th, 2012 at 3:59am
Up early so I suppose will take a few moment out to view a portion of the advertised ladened opening ceremony.

So don't forget to watch all the ads very very closely so you can buy their products and services during and after.

Listen very closely to the sports announcers making dumbed downed comments.

Second thoughts, I think I will go back to my original plan and check out a few garage sales and watch it when it comes out on VHS.

Is it just me or is this the most unexciting olympics ever? I didn't even know the opening ceremony was last night, and I haven't missed an opening ceremony in decades ....

I saw a bit of it - it was no where near as good as in the
opening ceremony in China.

It looked 2nd rate & very amateurish - almost cringe worthy.

Are you saying that you do not celebrate your birthday simply because it falls on the same day with predictable monotony but you are ballsy enough not to celebrate it just because you are told to celebrate it?
Same with your wedding anniversary and your kids' birthdays?

The Aussie women’s Water Polo team is far from “spurting well-oiled manhood” ;)

Wipe your chin – no on second thoughts you need to go straight to the shower – you dribble far too much. :-X

Austerity At The Olympics: Each “Gold” Medal Contains 1.34% Gold

Zero Hedge
July 29, 2012
As every Olympic athlete knows, size matters. The London 2012 medals are the largest ever in terms of both weight and diameter – almost double the medals from Beijing. However, just as equally well-known is that quality beats quantity and that is where the current global austerity, coin-clipping, devaluation-fest begins. The 2012 gold is 92.5 percent silver, 6.16 copper and… 1.34 percent gold, with IOC rules specifying that it must contain 550 grams of high-quality silver and a whopping 6 grams of gold. The resulting medallion is worth about $500. For the silver medal, the gold is replaced with more copper, for a $260 bill of materials. The bronze medal is 97 percent copper, 2.5 percent zinc and 0.5 percent tin. Valued at about $3, you might be able to trade one for a bag of chips in Olympic park if you skip the fish.

Size Matters…(via BBC)

Though Olympic gold is no longer 100 percent gold, a medal can still fetch big money. In 2010, a gold medal worn by Mark Wells, a member of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” U.S. men’s hockey team, was auctioned off for $310,700. Several years before that, Wells had sold his medal to cover medical expenses. Just before the auction, the medal was valued at $100,000 but it earned three times that amount. Heritage Auctions of Dallas identified the 2010 buyer as a rancher from the western U.S.
The question remains – with the minimum 103 medals expected to be won by US athletes, will Bernanke be forced to reduce the size of NEW QE as ‘all that precious metal is horded and repatriated back to the USA’?

Too expensive!

Much like the Commonwealth Games that only one other country apart from Australia (Queensland) bothered to bid for.

Queensland has budgeted a billion dollars (which will blow out to double that amount)to set up for the games, but can't afford to give a little bit of aid to the extremely disabled of the state.

Shame! shame! shame!

the spirit of the glorious Kim Jong Il lives on!

Quote:
Om Yun Chol claimed Olympic gold in sensational style after double world champion Wu Jingbiao failed to make his last lift in a thrilling finale to weightlifting's 56kg category at the London Games.

Amazingly, Om, from North Korea, triumphed from the morning's B group - supposedly for second-tier lifters - and was present in the stands to watch China's Wu fall agonisingly short.

Om, only the fifth man in history to lift triple his own body weight, put in a sensational performance as he equalled the world record and set a new Olympic best in the clean and jerk element (168kg).

His overall total of 293kg was four kilos more than managed tonight by Wu (289kg), who had to settle for silver, with fellow A group lifter Valentin Hristov, 18, claiming bronze - a first-ever weightlifting Olympic medal for Azerbaijan.

Om's victory is even more of a surprise considering he only managed sixth place in November's world championships - won by Wu - and has added 26kg to his total in the space of eight months.

Asked how he did this, Om replied: "There are no secrets. The reason I'm able to get the gold medal at this Olympics is due to the warm love and consideration of general Kim Jong-il (North Korea's late leader) and comrade Kim Jong-un. And because of them I was able to get great strength today."

Earlier in the day, Om added: "How can any man possibly lift 168kg? I believe the great Kim Jong-il looked over me."

North Korean gold - 3
Australian gold - 1

Well not really.  They mightn't be the world number 1, but they're still pretty buggeren good to even make it to the olympics.  Unless of course we're talking about the joke competitors who we're supposed to cheer for their 'spirit" like eddie the eagel, eric the eel and the latest addition to the catalgoue of olympic parasites, Hamadou Djibo Issaka. Rather than encourage him with calls of "you can do it" I'd have rathered security remove him from the course, beat him with their batons and put him on the first plane back to Nigeria...or better yet, give hima cnaoe and a paddle.  We'll see how much of a joke he thinks it is when he's forced to row back to Africa.  Encouraging him only makes a further mockery of the olympic ideals.

Quote:
You can do it," roared the announcer at Dorney Lake. Some of the crowd were on their feet, urging him on to the line.

No, this wasn't a British rower sprinting for gold. This was Hamadou Djibo Issaka, crawling to the finishing hooter in last place in a single sculls repechage at the London Olympics.

It wasn't quite "Eric the Eel" of Sydney Games fame - but it wasn't far off.

Djibo Issaka, a 35-year-old Nigerian, only learnt how to row three months ago but was given a wildcard to the London Olympics "to strengthen the principle of universal representation."

With a less-than-impressive technique and with the tank almost empty, he slumped over as he crossed the line on Sunday in 8 minutes 39.66 seconds - nearly 1.40 minutes behind the race winner.

Fellow wildcard Eric Moussambani also became a fan and media favourite at the Sydney Games in 2000 with his awkward technique and slow performances.

His one minute, 52.72 seconds in the 100 metres freestyle heats was more than double that of leading competitors and even outside the 200-metre world record.

Earlier this year, the Eel was named the Equatorial Guinea Olympic swimming team coach but the country did not bring a team to London.

Sure, those are noble pursuits.

Well, I agree that reporters are not noble. They're just carrying out a job description; anyone with a bit of confidence and verbal diarrhea can be a reporter.
However, not everyone can achieve excellence. And that's the whole point. It's those individuals who have the will to push themselves to greatness who ought to receive the accolades. Those who can't should only admire what they have achieved. I don't understand why someone would resent such excellence.

Actually, I do. Tall poppy syndrome. Lambasting the strong make the small feel temporary power.

I like the quiet achievers, the ones who go and do the job at hand to the best of their ability without the chest thumping and bragging, which only makes the athlete look totally stupid when they don't pull it off. The after tears don't make me feel very sympathetic either.

I don't go much on the pathetic excuses for not winning either, like I had a broken back or I had a heart transplant yesterday. Now they'll want extra funding.

It's always Aussie chokes or Aussie fails, never the other country was better. Why can't we give credit where it's due. The French 4x100 metre relay win was exceptional, but it was all about our loss.

Well..I hardly credit choking under pressure as falling "agonizingly short" of their lifes goals...the fact is they had it all handed to them and they just couldn't deliver.  back in the old days athletes had to work and pay their own way in life - now they expect the workers to fund them through Government and corporate handouts.... :P :P

Just look at them now. The chinks are cleaning up all of the gold medals and all they can do is grizzle about it !!

The question remains – with the minimum 103 medals expected to be won by US athletes, will Bernanke be forced to reduce the size of NEW QE as ‘all that precious metal is horded and repatriated back to the USA’?

all of that effort just to get a bit of fools gold and then bawl your eyes out when you don't :D LOL

Doctors, pilots and boilermakers don't get sponsored by the Australian taxpayers. We are up the top of the chart with the amount of funding we give our Olympians.

$588 million and that doesn't take into account what the states spend on maintenance of pools, fields etc.

What do we get out of it?

National pride, although even that seems to be thin on the ground for these Olympics.
.......................................................................

The cost of a gold medal is an extremely difficult thing to “price”. At its simplest, we can say that taxpayers paid (roughly) $588 million to the Australian Sports Commission for Olympic sport. Divide that by the likely number of gold (let’s be generous and say 12) and we get $49 million per bauble.

Well, at least we get national pride from it.

What do we get from the even-more-highly-funded parasites we euphemistically call "public servants"?  Well, we get more red tape, more pointless regulations, more annoyance and expense.  Apart from that.........ummm......nope.  Can't think of a thing.

Quote:
Four pairs in the badminton women's doubles competition created farcical scenes as they began deliberately playing to lose their matches at the London 2012 Olympics.

Two pairs from South Korea and one from each of China and Indonesia had already qualified for the finals but then tried to manipulate the standings by trying to lose their final round matches.

Players served into the net and hit the shuttle out of the court on purpose, creating confusion and outrage at Wembley Arena.

The debacle began when China's top-seeded pair Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang began to throw the match against South Koreans Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na in an effort to avoid China's second-seeded pair Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei at least until the final.

The Koreans became aware of the Chinese pair's plot and began copying them, causing referee Thorsten Berg to warn all four players. The match was eventually won by the Koreans 21-14, 21-11.

That didn't end the fiasco as a second Korean pair, third seeds Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jung, then tried to lose their match against Indonesia's Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii.

The Koreans were attempting to avoid playing Wang and Yu in the quarter-finals, an outcome they failed to achieve as they won 18-21, 21-14, 21-12.

The Indonesian pair had also tried to lose the game themselves.

Four of the eight players involved were shown the black card of disqualification by Berg, but this was rescinded on protest, before all players were booed off court by the angry crowd.

China, who dominate world badminton, have been involved in similar controversies before.

"China control everything. I don't know who controlled the match to lose but if it is China again, they did it so many times last year, they didn't play against each other in 20 matches. They do what they want," said Petya Nedelcheva, Bulgarian women's singles 15th seed.

Nedelcheva's comments are supported by figures in online magazine Badzine which show that of the 99 all-Chinese matches played in major tournaments in 2011, 20 were walkovers.

"It was a disgrace. We had four pairs on court trying to lose - very un-Olympic spirit," said Gail Emms, an Olympic silver medallist in 2004.

"I'm furious. It is very embarrassing for our sport."

Badminton's governing body has launched an investigation but is yet to comment on the issue.

We are, so why do the media and commentators constantly expect us to get in the top six of the medal count.

We needed to be taken down a peg or two. Let's be realistic, we're not as good as we claim to be.

This report puts it into perspective.

By Justin Shaw
......................................................

Here we go…

The Australian Olympic team unveiled their uniforms for the London Olympics the other night (I would put a link here but a flock of geese just flew within eight kilometres of the CBD so my connection dropped out again).

What I can tell you is this: ABC News did a lovely Adidas commercial with our Chef de Mission, Nick Green, who seemed quite chuffed with the number of sponsor's talking points he was able to get out in such a short time until his interlocutor kindly pointed out that Adidas are also supplying uniforms to our traditional rivals Great Britain so where's the advantage (other than free advertising on the national broadcaster)?

I can also tell you that our Table Tennis team will go with the revolutionary ensemble of shorts and a T-shirt, our swimmers aren't happy (no mention of that in the interview though?) and female Beach Volleyball competitors will no longer have to leap around like extras in Revenge Of The Horny Teenager Bachelor Party College Bikini Competition Gusset-Fest III.

Oh good my internet lasted long enough for another fifteen Viagra emails (I really need it, what with all the Russian brides declaring their love for me), but not long enough for me to check the ABC website. Where was I?

I watched the Adidas commercial (sorry, interview) a couple of times this afternoon (after filling in the authorisation forms for access to the office 486 and waiting for my turn at the office phone connection to plug in the 56K modem) and something Mr Green said struck me as, well, troubling, at least for someone like me, who hates the Olympics and government subsidy of anything that isn't me.

Australia is, apparently, aiming (hoping striving driving excelling etc) for a Top Five finish in the medal tally in London. Not just Top Five for Golds, but overall as well, mind you. Why, I wondered?

The answer took as long to come to me as it takes a photon to travel between my laptop screen and my eye - Money. Athletes get bonuses for medals as I suppose in some business models they should, I mean what's the point of being the best in the world at something for a couple of weeks if there's no coin in it?

But what does it really mean for us to finish Top Five? For us, I mean.

Not for our sports ministers, state and federal, not for the bloated ticks at the AOC, not for the hundreds of coaches and performance managers and administrators and bureaucrats who all seem to end up at every major sporting event in plum seats with catering laid on, I mean US, the public who pay for all this?

They keep talking about National Pride and Inspiration and all kinds of other unquantifiables that come out whenever government largesse is involved, be it for sport or the automotive industry, but what does that actually entail?

If there's a bunch of Belgians on my train, am I entitled to run up and say "in your faaaaaace, you triple-languaged European chocolate-monkeys, we got more gold medals than you hahahahahaaa!!!!"?

Do I have to pledge fealty to any US or Chinese citizen I meet? If we do beat Great Britain in the medal tally, am I allowed to go to London and throw a Liquorice Allsorts at the Queen?

What the slow-roasted, triple-glazed bugger does "National Pride", in the context of the medal tally at the world's second-most corrupt sporting event, actually mean?

Do we all hit the office or the shop floor the morning after watching an Australian gold medal and work harder or smarter? Do we produce anything quicker, do we suddenly innovate and diversify and become a "smart" economy?

Do we, come July, bask in the glow of all "our" gold medals and suddenly do something about the national skills shortage or find beds for all the Australians who are living in garbage bins?

Does a decent public transport system spring from the well of gold that the AOC drilled for us?

Do we suddenly live up to our potential as human beings and storm parliament, demanding that government and opposition alike do something other than mug for the cameras, pork-barrel and dog-whistle their way through the three-year election campaign that passes for a parliamentary term?

All this talk of "national pride" is just a way for parasitic sports administrators to blackmail governments at all levels to keep them on the gravy train: if you don't give us the moneys you is UnOrstrayan.

I've worked for and with various arms of government for a long time and the incongruity of sport funding as opposed to every government department (except sport) is glaring: a hospital meets its target and the government says "nice work, you can do it with less money next year". If the hospital doesn't meet its target, it's told to do more with less money next year, because it's obviously not trying hard enough.

The Olympics though, work on a win/win scenario: make the Top Five and they get bonuses (not just the athletes but, and to a much larger degree, the organisations that live off them) to encourage them to Keep Up The Good Work.

Miss out on a Top Five finish however and there's no stick, just more carrot: they yelp and squeal and shout "UnOrstrayan" long and loud enough and are handed more of our dollars because National Pride demands that they be given anything and everything they need to restore National Pride because National Pride and photo ops for the Minister.

There's nothing to cheer for this year, I'm afraid.

If our Olympic team does indeed make the Top Five, that means more of our dollars to John Coates and his cronies.

A "failure" in the medal tally on the other hand means we will still up the funding (at the expense of mental health, infrastructure that's needed for things other than propping up a local member or any of the other billion things that governments used to do), we just have to listen to more self-important, entitled, grasping for it.

Faster, higher, longer, more parasitic. The Best of The Pests.

Aussie rower Booth arrested for alleged vandalism

Australian rower, Josh Booth, is in post-competition trouble after being detained by London police over early morning damage to a shopfront. :o

Australian chef de mission Nick Green says he received a call about the 21-year-old member of the men's eight rowing team at about 3.30am (London time).

Booth was detained in a police station, where he fainted :-? and hit his head, leading to him being taking to hospital as a precaution.

It is believed Booth, who helped the eights finish sixth in their final earlier on Day Five, was under the influence of alcohol at the time. >:( ::) :P :-[

Booth has been released and sent back to the Olympic rowing accommodation where Green says the rower is receiving assistance.

"The rowing doctor and the rowing section manager were present (at the accommodation)," Green said at the Day Six media briefing.

No charges have been laid against the Victorian, but Green says he must go to back to the police station tomorrow.

"The police will either investigate the matter or make some outcomes out for the investigation," Green said.

"I don't know further details. So I can't make further comment on that. It is an ongoing investigation and I will allow the investigation to complete before we make any further comments."

Green said he does not know if other rowers were involved in the incident. :(

Shocking. They don't even try to pronounce the competitors names correctly.

Ray Hadley yells at the top of his lungs from start to finish, even if it's a 16 lap event.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that swimming was the only event. I wouldn't mind seeing other competitions, even if Australia is not represented. It's a global world channel nine, ya muffs!

Olympic coverage on free-to-air TV creates social media storm of complaints

The main complaints ranged from lack of coverage variety to uniformed commentary, too much repetition and too many commercials.

Even Channel Nine's own Facebook page is under siege, with one contributor demanding the network show sports other than ''swimming, repeats of swimming, interviews of swimming, analysis of swimming, previews of swimming''.

The comment posted by Matthew Taylor and signed by the rest of Australia, has attracted more than 105,000 ''likes''.

So it's all about money is it? Well, money obviously plays a role, no doubt. But to reduce it just to money is incorrect. The main driving forces are glory, admiration from peers, the feeling of power and pleasure that comes from beating the best, the feeling that all that training has paid off. This is something the neo-Marxist-anarchist types know nothing about. For them, superiority lies in 'the critique.' They believe just criticizing everyone and everything is a form of moral and intellectual enhancement. Pushing a pen around a bit of paper or punching words into a computer telling everyone else how much shame they ought to feel has nothing on the Olympians. The gulf between the two is immense.

This is the difference between destruction and creation. The Olympians are creators and innovators, an inspiration to everyone who believes in self-betterment. They have reached the top of their field through rigorous self-discipline, and attempt to push through to new boundaries and set new standards for other athletes to reach.

The neo-Marxist-anarchist on the other hand is their antithesis. They have achieved nothing, created nothing, have no understanding of reverence or excellence. They only know about 'critique,' destruction, shame, and making everyone feel misery.

Right here is one of the major problems of modernity: The 'small' man claiming to be the moral and intellectual benchmark of what is considered the 'good.' Bringing everyone and everything down to his base level of professional whinger. The neo-Marxist-anarchist feels like sh*t, so must everyone else. And he achieves this through his 'critique.'

The Olympians and every one else on the top of their field, whether that be in the sciences, engineering, sport or whatever, are the 'good,' the noble, the strong; and the neo-Marxist-anarchists are the weak, the ignoble, the psychological and physiological degenerate.

Ah...so its not just about the Amateur code and fair play - there is a right wing extremist political agenda here with the Olympic Games - winning isn't everything - its the only thing so cheat, steal, take drugs, kill, do what ever it takes to win and if you lose...cry your eyes out for being such a failure...and of course our taxes and hard workers must fund all this and the gravy train of corruption that goes along with it and the disgraceful behavior outside competition...

So in short, the Olympics are about right wing Nazi Political fables, ideologies and the glorification of social law...terrific... ;D ;D

Weightlifter expelled after latest positive drugs test

A weightlifter has been expelled from the London Olympics after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

Albanian Hysen Pulaku, 20, tested postive for stanozolol last Monday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said.

It was the same steroid taken by sprinter Ben Johnson in Seoul in 1988 and by Greek high jumper Dimitris Chondrokoukis, who withdrew from the games on Thursday, and is the first in-competition doping ban of these Olympics.

Pulaku was due to compete in the men’s 77kg class but now faces a possible two-year ban. His personal coach and uncle, Sami Pulaku, told the BBC they would not contest the decision.

‘‘We hope this will be a message that if you are doping we’ll catch you,’’ IOC spokesoman Mark Adams said.

"There are going to be 5,000 tests at these Games, so no-one should think they can get away with it.’’

The IOC said 1,001 drug tests had been conducted since the start of the Olympic period on July 16 and expected that number to reach 5,000 - 3,800 urine tests and 1,200 blood tests.

Pound: 'Only 10% of Olympics drugs cheats caught'

(CNN) -- Only 10% of drugs cheats are being caught at the Olympics. former anti-doping chief Dick Pound told CNN on Wednesday.

The London Olympics have been dominated so far by the displays of 16-year-old Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen, whose world record time in the 400 meter individual medley prompted questions about her performances.

John Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association described Ye's performances as "disturbing" but the young swimmer dismissed the allegations and Olympic officials insist that she is clean until proven otherwise.

"My results come from hard work and training and I would never use any banned drugs," she said.

Pound, who retired from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in 2008, said "anecdotally, maybe 10% of athletes use drugs and we're catching one or two of them."

He warned that the issue of drug cheating was "getting dumbed down" as sports organizations become "more worried about corruption."

"People who have prepared in advance and used drugs coming here (to London) won't get caught," said Pound.

"If you get caught you fail two tests, a drugs test and an IQ test."

Dick Pound, also a former vice president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), warned that testers are always playing catch up with the cheaters.

"You'd be pretty ambitious to say London 2012 was a clean Games. There are drugs we don't know about yet so we need to keep finding them and hunting down the distribution networks," he said.

"We know what's going on, but if you're going to do disqualify someone you have to have evidence. We're going to need more resources and more commitment from the sports organizations."

"Basically, they say it is too complicated, too expensive and they're more worried about corruption. It is getting dumbed down."

The IOC announced on Wednesday evening that Uzbek athlete Luiza Galiulina has been excluded from the Games after testing positive for furosemide.

Furosemide is commonly used to stop racehorses suffering nosebleeds, but is banned by WADA because it can be used to mask other drugs.

Galiulina wa provisionally suspended after failing pre-games testing on the 25h July. The 20-year-old's 'B' sample has confirmed the positive result, so the IOC have now expelled the gymnast from the Games.

Galiulina is the second athlete to fail a drugs test at the games after Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku tested positive for the steroid stanozlol, also in pre-games testing.

I think the final of the mens 200m is at 8.55pm + 9 hours =
5.55am  AEST.

So that will make it tomorrow morning Friday 10th August 5.55am.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Final

Stadium - Thursday, 09 August 2012 20:55   UK time.
That is 8.55pm Thursday 9th August in London.
That will be in Australia  EST -

I have confirmed ny time above:

THE countdown is on. At 5.55AM tomorrow (AEST) Usain Bolt makes his tilt at history. If he wins the 200m final he will become the first man ever to defend 100m and 200m Olympic titles

Usain wins the 200m mens final at 19.32 seconds.

It's not a new world record which he set as 19.19s at the 2009 World Championships.

Title: Re: LONDON 2012
Post by bobbythebat1 on Aug 10th, 2012 at 7:42am
Just saw the video - Usain slowed down in the last 20 meters.

He wasn't trying to break his own world record.

What a pity - I was hoping he would win the gold medal &
& break the 19 second barrier.

Testing is eight years behind the ability to mask the drugs and that gap is widening because there is no real will to stop cheating - to much money changing hands and gambling... :) :)

OK thanks - didn't know that.
Have you got a link?

Maybe Usain would have got $1 million to break it at another event.
