Title: "The phone is really a 1940s thing." Post by Deathridesahorse on Jul 29th, 2012 at 11:12pm

Google Fibre's ultra high-speed connections and television offerings are aimed at surpassing those of current providers, allowing users to search live channels, Netflix, YouTube, recorded shows and tens of thousands of hours of on-demand programming. However, no phone service is available. "The phone is really a 1940s thing. Why have a landline? It's sitting there, you use it once every two weeks," Pichette said. Google said it also intends to roll out product packages for businesses, but would not provide details. The phone has worked well since the 40s. You pick it up and get a dial tone. Who wants to wait for windows to boot up before you can make a phone call? Who wants a phone that catches viruses? I've started watching shows on the net occasionally, and the biggest downside is getting it set up. I am not going to buy and maintain another computer just for that. The people who will make money out of this are the ones who can provide dedicated, cheap hardware and software packages. That is not google.

They are a web based software company. They are not into manufacturing. There are already products on the market that do this sort of thing. They handle regular TV, USB drives etc. They aren't all that great yet, but will be soon. |

Death,

Yes - that is a good point. I hardly use the phone. A phone is a nuisance. People always phone me or I phone them at the wrong time. An email is much better as people can read it & reply in their own time without being interrupted. Messenger programs can be great too. You can share youtube & other links which is impossible on the phone. |

The other problem with landline phones is that you get these annoying calls from call centres, often speaking in some foreign accent, trying to sell you a product you don't want. They look you up in the White Pages and give you a blast.
It doesn't tend to happen with mobile phones. |

Yes - phone calls are going out of fashion. It's something that old people do who don't know how to use computers. |

Just added a poll:
Do you make phone calls less now than 10 years ago? Implication is that you communicate more by email & messenger or text instead of calling someone directly on the phone. |

Exactly, there will always be a place for it- just like snail mail- but evolution demands the abiliity to share ideas more efficiently! |

My physics professor at Uni gave a lecture on why he does not own a mobile phone it comes down to the microwaves they use to send signals to sattelites. The timed calls with mobiles is a rip off, wait till you are put on hold while waiting for someone and they can become very expensive. I have a landline with an answering machine to screen calls and no desire to get rid of that for a more expensive phone that operates on microwaves. I do use the internet for chatting with friends overseas. |

Baron,
Mobile phones don't transmit to satelites. They use the mobile phone towers located everywhere in the cities. I don't think small amounts of microwaves are dangerous. You should limit calls to a minute or so otherwise use a landline or skype. |
Title: Re: "The phone is really a 1940s thing." Post by Kat on Aug 11th, 2012 at 10:15am For all their tricks and functions, there is one thing that an old-fashioned land-line can do that a smart-phone cannot. Ever tried to slam the receiver down in the ear of an unwanted caller using a smart-phone? Doesn't work. |

You can always simulate it. Record the sound of a receiver slamming down on the keypad unit, then replay the sound of the phone slamming down just before hanging up. |
