Two Kiwis killed, six wounded in Bamyan

Two New Zealand soldiers have been killed and six have been wounded in an incident in Afghanistan's Bamyan province, the Defence Force says.   :(

The Kiwis were part of the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team and had gone to the aid of local security forces who encountered suspected insurgents near a village south of Do Abe, in the northeast of the province, about 7pm (NZT) on Saturday.

The six wounded were evacuated to a military hospital.

The Defence Force says it is in the process of informing and supporting next of kin and the names of the dead and wounded will not be made public for 24 hours to give the families time and space to grieve.


Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones said: "We are deeply saddened by this loss and, on behalf of the entire New Zealand Defence Force, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family, colleagues and friends of the personnel involved."

Five members of the New Zealand Defence Force have previously died in Afghanistan.    :(

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman has offered his condolences to the families.

"Our thoughts are especially with the families of those who died, and the families of those who were wounded.    :(

"The work the NZDF undertake in this region is dangerous and they have been well trained to respond to these incidents," he said.

Israel does not have troops in those countries.

Remember we are only a small country and our armed forces are fighting aggressors on all sides.

The reason you have none in those countries is because you dont play well with others. Why the heck other countries let you get away with it is prolly entrenched in religious crap. Its Israels region..we don't ask Israel to come to the Asia/Pacific to help us fight terrorism and oppression so why should Aussies and Kiwis die just because European Jews feel the need to park themselves in the Middle East

The true patriots are those who stand up for what is right. True patriots have scruples and do not accept behaviours that are unethical and damage a country's reputation.

We are never leaving Israel and every country in the UN not Muslim agrees this is our right to exist - even your country has said this exact thing.

Afghan war costs NZ $185m in five years

DURING the past five years the war on terror in Afghanistan has cost New Zealand $NZ185 million ($A143.07 million).
A further $NZ32 million has been budgeted this year, as the Defence Force prepares to withdraw its provincial reconstruction team, the Sunday Star-Times reports.
In the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 financial years $NZ44.1 million and $NZ50.03 million was spent while the country's SAS unit was in Afghanistan.
New Zealand will withdraw from Afghanistan next year, although a date is yet to be set.
Prime Minister John Key has said it was unlikely troops would be withdrawn early following the deaths of Lance Corporals Pralli Durrer and Rory Malone a week ago.
"This brings the total number of New Zealand soldiers who have lost their lives in Afghanistan to seven," Mr Key said last week.
Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully said last month that during the coming weeks a specialist team would visit Bamyan to draw up a detailed exit plan.
The papers also reveal the New Zealand Defence Force spent $NZ85.6 million over four years in Timor Leste and a further $NZ5.4 million has been budgeted in this financial year. A deployment to the Solomon Islands cost $NZ31.2 million from 2007-12, with $NZ4.1 million to be spent this financial year.
