Title: Getting to know the forum - age demographics Post by Upton Sinclair on Aug 13th, 2012 at 6:34pm
I'm just curious to know more about the people I'm conversing with, sometimes it's useful to put peoples opinions and attitudes in context of their demographic when discussing what can be heated issues.
So, please vote in my poll. Help a n00b get a better handle of this sometimes daunting forum :) |

I'm 32 and, no, I won't put an option for 'immortal' in my poll. I can live without your vote.

I remember a while back hotmail made me fill out my info, so I put 2000 as my DOB, out of pure laziness.
Several years later we were playing guitar hero on an XBox. They needed a microsoft login for me so I said use my hotmail - worked fine, until we noticed half the songs were missing. A bit of head scratching later and we realised that Microsoft had deemed those songs inappropriate for someone under 18. So I logged into hotmail to change it and it would not let me. So one of the other guys had to pretend to be my father and log into his hotmail account and adopt me and approve all the BS. Then microsoft demanded his credit card details to prove that he was over 18 and thus accept that he was my father. By this stage we were about to throw the bloody thing out the window. So we found another hotmail account with a suitable age. The dangers of putting personal info online - even when you make it up. When I take over the world and tattoo everyone's name on their forehead, you will get whatever name you first registered on here with. |

I'm not sure your story highlights any particular dangers of putting info online ... I'd say its more an example of Karma getting you back for lieing .... |

Light - even Jesus had a birth date & he is immortal. He is now 2012 +33 = 2045 years old. |

a coy mob aren't we Up...?
Teasers in general. :) But no-one has hit the poll. Maybe it is being treated like an 'ethnicity poll' would be. :-? OK OK I'm in the 50+ Why don't you answer your Poll? Or maybe you can't? Cheers and good luck :) |

You think it is somehow immoral to not hand over personal info to every website that asks for it? |
Title: Re: Getting to know the forum - age demographics Post by jalane on Aug 13th, 2012 at 10:55pm Good question FD. Do we feel obligated by social norms to reveal ourselves??? Are we so isolated, as individuals, that on-line contact has enormous value? Age demographics ...yes... I think you'll find that e-contact is hugely important, ...but mainly to those, say under 25...... and of significant importance to those under 45. Just a basic 'rule of thumb', you understand. For those of us who remember when TV was brought in, not so much.!! :) ;) Unless there is BUSINESS to consider.! Now don't get me wrong. I 'd like to think that I have a 'handle' on many co-posters. Whether I do or not I'll likely never really know. But I do eschew lies. And manipulative behaviour in general. Not to say I haven't 'suggested' some things. But who's to KNow, BUT me?? Unless of course there is a scurrilous skillful stalker out there. And.......of course there IS. !! Humans are capable of any nefarious act you could conceive of, and much more. We all partake of this particular freedom, at our own risk. That is at least clear to me.! You???? Guess that's your lookout. :) |

^ What John Smith said. There was nothing wrong with you putting your year of birth and 1st January as the birthday. One of my early Yahoo accounts (back in the late 1990s) contained a lot of false personal information and I vaguely remember reading somewhere in the User Agreement for Yahoo that having a false identity was grounds for account termination but I did it anyway. :D :D I wouldn't be surprised if the Internet was full of rogue identities. It is, after all, a place where you can get away with doing things that would have nastier consequences in physical reality. |

Age doesnt really give that much information about ppl when you dont know their background. Of course it would be stupid to tell much of that on here.

Even if people were to answer the poll, do you think they would all be truthful? People just hate giving personal information on the www, anonymous or not.
Their ages would be as false as their forum persona. |

I think that if they just anonymously click on the poll answer it is more likely to be truthful than if they post information about themselves. |

Does it really matter? Beyond a certain age, a person's intelligence starts to saturate. It then becomes a matter of how much experience they have. |
Title: Re: Getting to know the forum - age demographics Post by jalane on Aug 14th, 2012 at 9:50pm actually Mnemonic - this is not so. it has been found that the human brain continues to renew itself with new cells regularly, like the rest of the body. However this does not stop the forces of entropy, or the breakdown of DNA ...and its cohesiveness. Hence the aging syndrome. The new cells reproduced contain the effects of entropy. And of course, there is 'brain plasticity',... another new understanding. ( THIS is AMAZING) Which, simply put, means that the brain has the ability to expand new neural pathways at any age, IF, the consciousness is aware and determines to do so. We can train our brain, at any age.!! so long as dementia has not already taken hold. (well thats as simple as I can make it) Ideas of mental incapacity being inevitable may well be 'old thinking.' They go some way to explaining how octogenarians can take up University study, and succeed.!! Interesting isn't it.?? For everyone. :) |

Title: Re: Getting to know the forum - age demographics Post by jalane on Aug 14th, 2012 at 10:39pm John I certainly can deny that. I am free to dispute that. I don't actually believe in instant karma.... which is pretty much what you are saying. Karma has nothing to do with it. Seriously..!! :) What happened as a result of your false inputs are a perfectly logical result of the tech world we live in now. Nothing 'beyond' about it.!!! 8-) |
