Gillard has faced many embarrassments and low-points throughout her corrupt tenure as Prime Minister, but this latest has to be the worst gaffe of all. Her OWN appointed panel have disagreed with what she's been saying for over a year - that Malaysia will stop the boats and people smugglers, and Nauru won't work. They have agreed with the Coalition's proven policy of stopping the boats. How can they stay with her now?

Gillard stepping aside is the last piece in the puzzle. The carbon tax is in, the angst about the boat arrivals has been neutralized and ultimately the Libs will be stuck with the unpopular Tony Abbott while the new Labor leader gets a honeymoon ride down the inside.

Everyone I know is just as pissed about the carbon tax now as they were when it was announced. I live in swan's seat and you'd better believe he's just one of many MPs whose seats are gone, gone, gone at the election. A new leader can only save seats, you're brain-dead stupid if you think they can actually win.

It's not just Gillard - her entire government is rotten to the core. It's time for an election when it takes an independent panel to reverse government policy back to what was originally in place prior to Rudd dismantling the Pacific Solution. Also, notice that Gillard has yet to say "I got it wrong".

its a funny thing about someone in opposition.. they are basically hog tied..

when Abbott took over as leader and he made his speech in parliament he was very very forceful.and articulate. very impressive I thought and so did a lot of others..

I think when Tony gets in we will see a whole different Tony.

from memory we have seen a whole different Julia since she got herself a few deals to get into parliament..deals as far as I know shes mostly reneged on.

As all you highly political aware commentators would have clearly comprehended by this late date in the rain of Miss Gillard the ALP is just the child of the Sussex Street Union Power Brokers who control every aspect of the Labor party.

Sussex Street plotted the downfall of Mr Rudd because Mr Rudd is not a UNION MAN and they made the gravest mistake of their corrupt existence when they incorrectly assessed Miss Gillard's suitability and ability for the PM role. Miss Gillard has proved to be a miserable failure as PM as it is simply unable to undertake the responsibilities of the PM role due to its obvious lack of talent and intelligence and personal confidence and it is now loathed and despised by the Australian voters.

The Sussex Street bodies have nightmares where they visualize the horrible embarrassment of seeing Miss Gillard trying to campaign with that unbearable speech impediment and being howled down and hunted out by extremely angry Australian voters and totally destroying the ALP's chances in the election.

Thus the Sussex Street bodies would very much like to get rid of the unpopular Miss Gillard. But Miss Gillard has created such a smelly dunghill of miserable failures that it is difficult for Sussex Street to persuade any of the other Labor morons to take over as PM only to crash head on into an election disaster.

So to help things along Sussex Street is clearing away some of the problems in the hope that this will persuade a new PM to come along. There is no doubt that Sussex Street has organized all this current wishy washy effort to stop the illegal invaders as they hope to get the Coalition to come on side to reinstate Nauru along with TPV. In all this Miss Gillard is simply the puppet of the Sussex Street Union Power Brokers and is just being told what to do and say. It is also highly likely that Sussex Street is behind all the renewed interest in Miss Gillard's past with Mr Wilson as they are probably going to use this to convince Miss Gillard to slide off the throne.

Sussex Street's other very strong motivation to push Miss Gillard off the throne to improve Labor's chances at the election is the slimy slithering sinister Communist Green serpents who are also controlling their puppet the ALP. As everyone knows the Communist Greens are just a mob of totally impractical looney delusional Socialist drongos that hardly anyone voted for but these candle lit cave dwellers reckon that if Miss Gillard totally stuffs up Labor's chances then they will have a good chance to pick up lots of totally disillusioned former Labor voters and their vision is to try to replace the ALP as the 2nd major party.

Thus the Sussex Street Union Power Brokers have a very strong motivation to push the stuffup prone Miss Gillard off the throne simply to save the ALP from being reduced to the 3rd party in Australia by being replaced by the horrible Communist Greens with their stupid unsustainable Socialist rubbish and their plan to destroy Australia. Just how it will all play out remains to be seen but Miss Gillard has to go in the next 2 months to give the new PM a chance to get rolling before the election.

Just how that recognized height of intelligence of the Communist Greens Sarah Hanson-Young will react when her beloved illegal invaders are stopped remains to be seen. Just what revenge the nasty Communist Greens will try to exact on the ALP also remains to be seen.

ALWAYS paint yourself as the underdog,  the liberal supporters here should take a deep breath and realize the last thing you want is to hit the front in the melbourne cup at the half way point.

you have to get momentum , it is politically unwise for the libs to declare this election done and dusted.
