Title: Win/win Solution Post by the wise one on Aug 14th, 2012 at 9:40am
With the Houston report recommending the reopening of Nauru and Manus Island for processing of asylum seekers all I can see is a win/win for labor.
If the boats stop coming Abbott can't keep saying "Stop the boats. Stop the boats" every 5 minutes. If the boats don't stop Gillard can say I have put Liberal Policy in place so blame the liberals for the boats coming here all the time. So Gillard and Labor got nothing to lose while Abbott and the Liberals have everything to lose. |

You forgot the part that 'the policy of liberals was right in the first place and that it may work again'.
Your win win sounds more like partisan labor crap. It is a lose for labor if liberal policy works again, a lose for liberals if their policy does not work again. But dont forget, turning back the boats is part of the solution that worked. |

What about the fact that Gillard's own appointed comittee approved of the Coalition's policy, and rejected her's?

But to be fair, you are predicting a Gilalrd election victory and any other number of rather silly things so you view of this being a labor win/win is unlikely to be a good analysis. This is after all little more than Gillard admitting that her previous policy was crap and that the Abbott policy was good. How that is a 'win' for labor is anyones guess and i your case, your fantasy/delusion. |
Title: Re: Win/win Solution Post by Doctor Jolly on Aug 14th, 2012 at 11:15am
Gillard could have spun this a lot better.
If I were her I would have said: " it has always been labor policy to respect the lives and struggles of refugees, and our policies have always had this in mind in conjunction with Australias security. However what has happened over the past year and in conjunction with the independent review, it has come to light that we must take away any extra incentive for refugees to risk their lives in the timor sea. While off shore detention is a cruel and inhuman solution as we saw in the Howard years, it is better for refugees than risking life on the seas. Australia is truly stuck between a rock and a hard place. It is therefore with regret that at this stage off shore processing must be reintroduced to stop the carnage on our seas. But be clear on one thing. labor will endevour to put in place better procedures so that we dont see the horrific mental illnesses seen previously under the pacific solution". |

I would think this is another nail in her coffin and its all self inflicted...OWN GOAL I think its called.. they have tried her way and all it did was cost billions..we now have a huge amount of uninvited people sitting on our welfare system.. as far as I know those that break the rules that come in by air..and overstay. do not end up on our welfare system... yesterday it was announced a scheme that helped Indian students get work visas was smashed.. these young people paid thousands.. [dont tell me they didnt know it was illegal].to get round our laws... and its taken 5 years to stop it..... for now. |

in effect, that is EXACTLY what they said. They came up with recomendations which is essentially rejecting the Malaysia solution and accepting Abbots policy which is effectively Howards Solution. |

they did not, if you'd bothered to read beyond the headlines and read the report you would see that they found that the Malaysia solution is in fact a good idea ... it just needs a little tweaking ... and there was no mention of TPV's .... |

Actually they said it wasnt good enough - which is what everyone has been saying. And there is currently no plan to use Malaysia for just that reason. Get over it. You and Gillard are the only ones thinking Malyasia was a good idea. It was just another amteur labor policy, doomed to failure and self-implosion on a spectacular level. |
