Animal rights activists have denounced the "cruel" treatment of cattle in Indonesia after pictures emerged of cows being lifted by a crane from ropes tied to their heads.

It is another blow to the country's reputation for dealing with livestock following international criticism in 2011 when the ABC's Four Corners program aired footage of Indonesian abattoir workers torturing cows shipped from Australia.

The scandal prompted the Government to suspend live exports to Indonesia for a month.

The scandal prompted the Government to suspend live exports to Indonesia for a month.

Another photograph shows seven live cows being lifted in a similar fashion in one group, with their necks outstretched.

The boat transporting the cattle had come from Sumbawa island, around 500 kilometres east of Surabaya, but it is not clear whether that is where the cattle were reared.

The cattle were to be transported to the capital Jakarta, according to a worker in the operation who declined to give his name.

It is not known which company was transporting the cattle.

While a large number of cattle are transported around Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, it is not normal practice to lift animals up by their heads.

If these b@stards want our meat, then it should always come pre-killed.

If they won't take it that way, sell it to someone else, and let 'em starve.

I agree with you and the only way to stop this is to reopen all the meatworks across the north of the country that closed when this cruel trade was first dreamed up and then ban all live shipments of animals from this country.

It wasn’t exactly “dreamed up”; the Indonesians want a “warm, wet” product, not a frozen one. Also I’m not sure how many have access to fridges/freezers/cool rooms etc.

That said, I agree, take it frozen or eat something else.

Theres no need to freeze meat when Indonesia is only a few hours flight away from our North.
We fly tonnes of stuff there every day and meat killed and flown out of Darwin on the same day only needs to be chilled like any meat sold in Australia.
PS. like in most countries across the globe just about every Indonesian has a fridge or icebox and a telly and you'll find the poor that cant afford a fridge cant afford to buy our meat anyway.

you are correct fri yay,  exports of refridgerated meat to indonesia would not be possible as the meat would be a green festering mess of maggots before it ever got to the table,

that said, there will be more middle class (by income ) people in indonesia in 10 years than there are in oz and indonesia is growing at 8 percent and will eventually become number 5 in the world if this continues.

enormous opportunities for us, so i wouldnt offend them too much.

maybe we can organize a bunch of refridgerated vans to transport the pre killed meat around and control the whole supply chain.

BTW,  aussie meatworks are fairly sickening places too.
and horse knackeries in the usa still shoot horses and if he moves his head, they sometimes shoot him more than once.

Granted.

I've worked in abattoirs.

But I never saw a single animal deliberately mistreated.

I still think a lot of it falls into this “warm/wet” product – not sure if it is cultural/religious – but that’s what they want.

The main problem is the cattle thats produced up north is so crap we dont buy it so they passed this rubbish off to the Indonesians as Aussie Beef.
The reason why they couldnt sell it here when the bans were on is because Aussies wouldnt touch it with a barge pole.
The producers are as much a problem as the meatworks in Indonesia and if we actually sold them packaged and chilled real Aussie Beef these Northern Cattle producers would be out of business in a flash.

The issue here is - a long time ago someone decide to include animal slaughter in their holy writings

like many who follow holy writings - they have not had the sense to realise things have changed

I am not suggesting we should eat road-kill like the Greens do - but there is a limit

We can have it slaughtered, packed and on their shelves quicker than shipping and slaughtering them there and the meat is far better when the animal isnt stressed for days and then slaughtered in cruel circumstances.
Given a choice Indonesians would prefer decent meat than what they are getting now..just like any other consumers

I'm not sure thats right.

i worry a lot more about the massive feedlots full of steroid and antibiotic fed cattle now burgeoning throughout OZ.

they may taste a bit better (as the poor buggers just stand in sh*t up to their withers all day andso are full of marbled fat) but i doubt they are that good for you,

certainly the teenagers think a big mac pattie is the best tasting beef despite being 3 per cent cow.  they'd be healthier eating our live exports, i assure you

If you work on a cattle station its what you eat,  most times better than what you buy down south. NOT STREEST TO DEATH

They want a warm wet product.

why does it matter WHERE THE ANIMALS COME FROM...we always hear the cry AUSTRALIAN CATTLE... I dont give a fig where they were born cruelty is cruelty.. if we cant do better than to train these countries on the ethics of animal treatment..then something is bloody wrong..if they dont like our interference dont take our overseas aid then.

Anyway...its easier, quicker and more humane to process the cattle here and fly the chilled meat to Indonesia and in the end the Indonesian consumer ends up with a better product and we end up with more jobs in this country.
Case closed..

When rouge operators are identified in any industry it is up to the police or governing body to charge and prosecute the offenders.....The first question that needs to be asked has any law been broken and what can be done to change the practice at that particular port.....No doubt animal activists have searched far and wide for such an incident to close the industry altogether???
