AUSTRALIA'S highly emitting brown coal power generators will reap $2.3 billion to $5.4 billion in windfall profits from carbon price compensation, an analysis by a leading energy market expert has found. While brown coal power plants based in Victoria's Latrobe Valley will get billions in compensation, the analysis suggests they have so far been able to pass on all of their extra costs of the carbon price - thus turning the compensation into pre-tax profit. The analysis carried out by Bruce Mountain, director of consultants Carbon + Energy Markets, looked at half-hourly spot prices for electricity sold from four Victorian brown-coal fuelled power plants - Hazelwood, Yallourn, Loy Yang A and Loy Yang B - over the first six months of the carbon price. Environment Victoria, which commissioned the analysis, demanded the federal government review the compensation for coal power plants. Advertisement Its campaigns director, Mark Wakeham, said: ''It is a terrible result for taxpayers and the environment if our dirtiest power stations like Hazelwood are becoming more profitable as a result of compensation payments.'' |

No one on the left is willing to comment on this?
These businesses are passing carbon tax to consumers through price hikes and the pocking compo as profits |

It just shows that Labors half arsed plan handing out compensation to households and the polluters was a stupid idea.
Abbotts and the Greens carbon tax with no compensation is the one that should have our full support |

Compensation was always part of the package. In fact it was the right wingers who pushed so hard for it, right back in the day when the Turnbull/Rudd solution was set.
Would you rather no compensation was provided to impacted industries. ? I'd wouldnt mind if so. |

That one of the reason why Swan can't achieve an surplus/erection in the last 5 Budgets is because he's paying big business $5B in compo while let them profiteer |

At least we have a carbon price. even if it is flawed. Tony thinks "climate change is crap" and will dismantle the carbon price. You don't want to send Australia behind the rest of the world do you? |

Why did Tony say that Whyalla would be wiped of the face of the map? Why did Tony say that the carbon price would be like a"wrecking ball" through the economy Why did tony tell these lies? As you have just shown us - the carbon price is not harshe enough. Why did Tony lie to us? Why doe he think "climate change is crap"? Why does Tony want to send Australia backwards and not have carbon pricing like the rest of the world? |
