Prime Minister Julia Gillard has unveiled her new frontbench team, announcing that Labor is now "united with a sense of purpose" after last week's farcical leadership spill.

Key Kevin Rudd backer Anthony Albanese has been promoted to the Regional Development and Local Government portfolio vacated by Simon Crean, who was sacked for disloyalty after sparking last week's attempted coup.

Mr Albanese retains his current Infrastructure and Transport portfolios.

Western Australian MP Gary Gray has been promoted to the Cabinet as Minister for Resources and Energy, Minister for Tourism and Minister for Small Business.

Mr Gray, a former Woodside executive, had been widely tipped to take the role.

Ms Gillard also announced that the Department of Climate Change is being merged with the Industry Department to become the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.

The merger means that Greg Combet retains his role of Minister for Climate Change, and adds Industry and Innovation to his portfolio.

Craig Emerson adds the Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research to his current responsibilities.

Jason Clare joins Cabinet as a full member while retaining his current responsibilities.

Tony Burke adds Arts to his current Environment portfolio.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus takes on new roles of Special Minister of State and Minister for Public Service and Integrity.

Announcing the reshuffle, Ms Gillard said the party had moved on from what she said were the appalling events of last week.

While purpose has driven us on, unity has eluded us," she said.

"That unity spectacularly eluded us last week.

"Like Australians around the nation, I was appalled by the events of last week. Our eyes were on ourselves rather than doing what we should being focused on the nation. It was an unseemly display. But out of that has come clarity."

Governor General Quentin Bryce will swear in the new ministry at Government House this afternoon.

Ms Gillard emerged victorious from a special caucus meeting last Thursday after Mr Rudd refused his supporters' calls to again stand for the leadership.

The farce claimed Rudd backers Chris Bowen, Martin Ferguson and Kim Carr, who all resigned from the ministry.

Love the group-pic of the Con-alition, Maqqa.

Actually, I'd sooner vote for the Muppets than either
Labor OR the Con-alition.

Both parties deserve to wither and rot on the vine.

As do their more one-eyed supporters.

Animal must be tony too.  Figures you'd vote for a deranged individual only competent enough to hit his head against a drum.

Gary Gray the new Minister for the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education

Is Labor so pathetic now that it needs to give itself such a large name to gain credibility?

Gray will be the Gillard government's sixth minister for small business, following Craig Emerson, Nick Sherry, Mark Arbib, Brendan O'Connor and Chris Bowen - the last five in 15 months

How serious is Gillard about Small Businesses if she's rotated 6 people through the portfolio

Whatever Cabinet she has now, it won't help her win. Julia has repeatedly said that her party doesn't care about polls. While you can't become so obsessed about them to the point of becoming superficial and/or where you deliberately do stuff to manipulate your popularity and image, there's a point at which polls become important. When your polls are so consistently low, you have to ask yourself: are you the problem?

If there's one good thing about the Rudd Government, it was that Kevin Rudd made fewer mistakes than Julia Gillard. Julia's most frequent criticism of the Government under Rudd was that "it couldn't get things done." But maybe it was right to sometimes not do something, especially when it leads you to make mistakes. Kevin was more careful and cautious. I think this is where thoughtful inaction is better than doing something and making mistakes.
