Former cabinet minister Simon Crean, whose press conference set off Labor’s bungled leadership spill last Thursday, admits he missed a text message from former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd which could have avoided the whole ordeal.

Speaking to Alan Jones on 2GB this morning, Mr Crean admitted he didn't see a text message from Mr Rudd which urged Mr Crean to hold off on any move against the PM.

"Gidday Simon. I'm told you saw the PM last night. If that's so and if it in anyway touches the leadership, and if you are making any public comments, please give me a call beforehand. My position is as before. All the best. Kevin," the text read.

Mr Crean says he was in a meeting which prevented him from reading the text.

The former minister says he spoke to senior minister and Rudd-backer Chris Bowen just before the fateful press conference, who said 'we need to go harder'.

Mr Rudd says the Crean press conference took him by surprise, describing it as a 'spontaneous combustion'.

The 7 Cabinet people who resigned over this must be sooooooo pissed at Crean right about now!!!
