Title: Some advice with my computer, please ....
Post by Herbert on Apr 15th, 2013 at 3:51pm
Where is the computer Help thread on this forum board?

Something's buggered up my Firefox browser's Toolbars setup ~ and I've been trying all day to get them back.

System Restore didn't help.

The browser I have now is missing my Tab bar (Options > Tabs > Always show the tab bar ) ~ doesn't work.

I downloaded an old Firebox browser to fix this problem (as advised) ~ but can't open the .xpi extension.

(Rightclick menu bar > Customize ... ) ~ no joy.

It's Google that keeps hijacking my browser layout and other things.

Hi Herbert
We need Moses on here.

My suggestion is to try Tools Clear Recent History including virtually all the boxes then restart the browser

This among other things will clear you cache and history, I have had browser problems caused by websites I have visited being stored in cache history etc

Hi John! Glad to see you here.

I'm guessing Moses will be along shortly.

These bloody 'updates' of Google and Firefox etc never seem to come up with anything but a worse version of what they had before.

They stuff with the toolbars, the bookmarks setup, etc etc so you have to use a search engine to try to get back the format that once suited you best.

Seen Photobucket lately? It used to be a great little image hosting site ~ but it's now utter crap. A total bugger up.

Catch you later.

That's just one of the many things I tried.

Didn't work.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks for sharing.

Why O why do these software designers feel they have to tamper with already very good browser formats?

They screwed up Photobucket so badly that I now use Imageshack.

They're like small kids who keep on fiddling around with the delicate parts of their toys until they fall apart.

I'm thinking of bypassing all the angst and going straight through to install Opera as my new browser.

Is there a 'Preferences' option somewhere? My knowledge of computers is only very basic.

well my main problem was getting all my addons working again,my main set up stayed the same which is making me wonder if you have maybe got a browser hijack afterall...download malwarebytes and double check:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

run the quick scan

and then download superantispyware free:

http://www.superantispyware.com/

its probably the damn update though.

Sounds like an update. Make sure autoupdate is off or it will happen again and again.

Thanks for that. For the last two days my startups have be stopped halfway to getting to the desktop. A lot of other 'defective' poo going on too.

I ran my TrendMicro anti-virus = Nothing. Spybot Search and Destroy = Nothing. RegCure Pro = Nothing.

I tried my Macrium Reflect Recovery Disk = wouldn't work. I've had various 'Recovery Disks' over the years, with not one of them ever working. Useless as tits on a bull.

... er ... no.

Super-etc and Malwarebytes didn't find any problems.

My paid-for TrendMicro antivirus is crap, and I just might format the hdd and do a reinstall of the OS.

But first I'll try Opera.

It's gone from bad to worse.

Helpful Advice: Do NOT install Macrium Reflect as your backup app.

Hi Moses.

I'm unable to copy your links.

Thanks.

I'll be doing a clean/install tomorrow.

I had problems with Macrium as well, Herb.

Now I use EaseUS ToDo Backup Manager Free edition.

It does work, I've used it myself for a while now, with no issues at all.

It's very easy to use, pretty-well fool-proof. Their free partitioning software is
very good too, I use that as well.

Get it here....  http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm

Link is to the official EaseUS website, and is clean. You don't need to
register, and you won't get spammed.

**EDIT:- There's also a full-function paid version (Workstation v5.8), which is
very good, and which I've just upgraded to.**

Thanks, Kat.

The reason I got banned from Mozilla Firefox's forum some time ago is because I chucked a fit and used .... er .. some intemperate language to describe the idiots who design the interface with its incomprehensible wording as against the laudable and clever boffins who design the actual software.

Take Macrium, for instance. Nowhere can one see the option to restore all of one's backup. There's only the option to restore one file or folder at a time ~ which you just know can't be right.

Anyhooo ... I'll try your suggested backup program. I had Acronis backup system for years, but then it went dead on me for reasons that are still a mystery.

All I want from my backup app is extreme simplicity. Just backup the whole hdd at the one go, and no daily 'incrementals', etc. And I still can't work out what the hell the difference is between 'Copy the hdd' and 'Image the hdd' and 'Clone the hdd'.

Is it any wonder I use 'intemperate' language when confronted by such inscrutable crap?

Kat ~ I've noticed your recommended backup app. doesn't have a free bootable rescue disc like Macrium has. That's not good.

Hmmm ... I might try to get back with Acronis.

But wait! There seems to be a problem:

I'm posting this for the benefit of anyone who is thinking of paying $$$ for an Acronis licence.

I've been an Acronis user since 2005 – both Server and PC versions. At the start it was a great product. I used the 32 bit server version for years and recovered partitions, used it for P2V conversions etc. It had a few issues but it mainly worked.

Over the past 2 to 3 years something has gone wrong with Acronis. Where I work we have had images that would not restore (the server was fine – we just wanted to move it to different hardware) and repeated crashes and failures.

The last straw for me was buying 2 copies of ATI Home 2012. They are on 2 computers at home – neither works as the dropdown box for selecting the source drive or partition to copy won't populate. 60 seconds on google found stacks of other users with the same issue.

You create one from within the program after installation.

Thanks Moses and Kat. I'll try it. :)

****

I've downloaded and installed it. I've been Googling for half an hour without success trying to find out what 'System Backup' means, and what 'Disk and Partition Backups' means.

The different options under the titles of 'Disk Copy', and 'Disc Clone', and 'Disc Imaging' is still a mystery to me.

I want to backup my entire 'C' drive (local drive) with all my folders and files, etc.
