Just got back from dawn service, seems Gillard thinks the 'Ville' is worth a visit during the ANZAC day services.

Up at Dawn for the pipes in the park here.... as the dawn slowly breaks on a clear morning, the twin guns that point seawards - one a 25 pounder, the other a 105mm, stand stark and somehow forlorn as the crowd gathers silently and considers again the terrible loss of all those young lives.

War will always be with us - and will come again, but on this morning we remember all those who have gone before.

This day gets me every year :'( :'(

This day
=> I put aside all political what for art thou's
=> I don't even think about rights/wrongs justification for wars

I just think about and remember those men and women who served and sacrificed themselves for this country

It's not a day for right or wrong

It's a remembrance day

It's a thanks giving day to past and present service men and women

And acknowledge the sacrifices their families made

In the overall scheme of things, then yes, died for us.

At the time, you'll find they died for their mates in their immediate unit - not for any flag, not for Australia, but for their mates.

The same as those died for any country in any modern conflict.

That's what matters. That's what matters now that they are dead. You will die soon enough. Who will look at your death and say - 'he died for us'.
