so i just brought a new 4 wd and the lassie who was insuring it for me told me i get new for old replacement for the first 3 years.  ie, if i write it off in the first 3 years, they will replace it with a new vehicle.

now i'm fairly hard on vehicles and after 3 years this baby will have a good number of scratches and dents  , i can assure you.

so i said to her,  surely thats just a crazy idea.  a dishonest person would just take it up to fraser island at 2 years 11 months, get it bogged in one of the numerous creek crossing (easy to do)  and then wait 2 hours while the tide came in and buried it.

why offer something which people are going to potentially abuse.
seemed an odd offering to me.

What was her response??

You can bet somewhere it the fine print it will say it needs to be a not at fault accident with a Unicorn driving a sky blue model T with a pregnant badger in the rear seat.

If it sounds too good to be true it usually is ;)

my feeling exactly smithy.  her response was that there would be "an investigation' to see driver negligence led to the car being written off.  a new definition of "fully comprehensive" ;)

guess what aqua we are all paying for that..

a friend of mines daughter and her then fiance bought a 4x4 after a couple of months they hated it.. so they said.. probably couldnt afford it.. whilst mum and dad were visiting me they get a phone call to say the car had been stolen....oh dear shame boohoo.. the next we hear car has been found burnt out....shock horror..

it was many years later the girl fessed up they got a mate to steal and burn....

can we not assume this goes on all the time.. :'( :'(

i would not call that an accident.

Mmmmm. How much extra is your insurance costing you should be the first question. Many dealers get a commission for insurance and finance when sold with a new vehicle.

To me, it almost sounds like an agreed-value policy with a few variations, again an incentive for you buy the insurance offered.

Read the fine print, I'd suggest. Too many options are available to insurance companies these days, which, in effect, can leave you uninsured if they so choose. Case in point, all motor vehicle insurers have a clause along the lines of "the vehicle must be registered and in a road-worthy condition". Once upon a time, the first thing an assessor did was look at your tyres - bald tyre/s, no insurance. Nowadays that rule has relaxed a great deal - but it is still enforceable, at the sole discretion of the insurance company.

The quality of your insurance, like many other things, is often dependant on how much you pay. Do you wish to take a chance?

But you have a valid point. It seems wide open for abuse.

Some insurers provide 3 years, some less, but new for old is a reasonably common motor insurance clause & it applies across all vehicles.

It's a matter of swings & roundabouts? Some people may have a lend, but on average most are reasonably honest?

i wouldnt do that red,  i truly believe in karma.  dishonesty will always get you in the end.  i just thought it was an odd way to encourage good behaviour and has the potential to reward scoundrels.

I have just received a letterbox drop from Australian Post offering car insurance at reduced rates by  as much as $200... anyone insure with them???.. its a new one to me...

We are on the same page Aquascoot, I too believe in Karma. Sometimes it take years for Karma to grab someone by the throat.

But I have seen enough in this crazy old world to realise, that what you do comes back to you, good or bad.
