Title: syrian rebels were the ones who used chem weapons
Post by JC Denton on May 10th, 2013 at 10:06am
says UN

Quote:
According to the testimonies we have gathered, the rebels have used chemical weapons, making use of sarin gas," del Ponte, a former war crimes prosecutor, said in an interview with Swiss radio late on Sunday.
"We still have to deepen our investigation, verify and confirm (the findings) through new witness testimony, but according to what we have established so far, it is at the moment opponents of the regime who are using sarin gas," she added.
She stressed that the UN commission of inquiry on Syria, which she is a part of, had far from finished its investigation.
Turkish authorities are carrying out blood tests on Syrians who have fled the fighting at home to determine if they have been victims of chemical weapons, a medical source said Monday.
"Samples have been taken from people wounded in Syria who have been transported to Turkey," the source said on condition of anonymity, adding that the results were not yet known.

And if it is the Syrian rebels who have used chem weapons, then nobody wants to know about it.

Why is that so ?

Al Qaeda rebels in Syria have been accused of using Sarin gas.

But the US and its allies suffer from 'three monkeys' syndrome ???

This allegation coming on the back of disturbing reports of FSA units defecting to Al-Nusra in droves. This does not bode well for the post-Assad Syria IMO:

Quote:
Free Syrian Army rebels defect to Islamist group Jabhat al-Nusra

Syria's main armed opposition group, the Free Syrian Army (FSA), is losing fighters and capabilities to Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist organisation with links to al-Qaida that is emerging as the best-equipped, financed and motivated force fighting Bashar al-Assad's regime.

Evidence of the growing strength of al-Nusra, gathered from Guardian interviews with FSA commanders across Syria, underlines the dilemma for the US, Britain and other governments as they ponder the question of arming anti-Assad rebels.

[...]

Abu Ahmed and others say the FSA has lost fighters to al-Nusra in Aleppo, Hama, Idlib and Deir al-Zor and the Damascus region. Ala'a al-Basha, commander of the Sayyida Aisha brigade, warned the FSA chief of staff, General Salim Idriss, about the issue last month. Basha said 3,000 FSA men have joined al-Nusra in the last few months, mainly because of a lack of weapons and ammunition. FSA fighters in the Banias area were threatening to leave because they did not have the firepower to stop the massacre in Bayda, he said.

The FSA's Ahrar al-Shimal brigade joined al-Nusra en masse while the Sufiyan al-Thawri brigade in Idlib lost 65 of its fighters to al-Nusra a few months ago for lack of weapons. According to one estimate the FSA has lost a quarter of all its fighters

Of course the US is not going to admit the rebels are using CW - if it means retracting their accusation of CW use by Assad.

cods,

Why would you imagine that our political leaders [US, Western nations] today, are not now, as much the fools that they were, 10, 20 years ago ?

Love of Truth, will protect us, and teach us how to choose.

But most men hate truth, when it exposes their own folly.

Most men [and women] are not willing to be corrected.

They feel that correction is beneath them.

Psalms 94:8
Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?
9  He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
10  He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?
11  The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.
12  Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;
13  That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

I'm still puzzled as to why we give a f*ck in the first place.  We didn't care when Iraq was using chemical weapons against Iran or Iraq's Kurdish population.  Why do we suddenly care now?

Oh, right, the same reason why we suddenly gave a sh*t about Iraq's chemical weapons leading up to the 2003 invasion. It was the most politically expedient means of exerting our national interests in the region.

Syria is an important geo-strategic piece of territory for both Iran and Russia - which for obvious reasons the US would like to dislodge.

The truth is though, the US hasn't really been very fussed by the Iranian client state, and the nominal threat it poses for US interests. They will support Syrian rebels, and go through the motions (including the propaganda about chemical weapons), but the reality is they are not going to go out of their way to enforce regime change.

Similar situation with Israel - its no secret that Israel and the Assad regime are openly hostile (Syria supplies Hezbollah rockets, and Israel conducts airstrikes inside Syrian territory every now and then), but in many ways the status quo is preferable for Israel than the alternatives - especially (as seems increasingly likely), the Al-Nusra islamists seize control after Assad is overthrown.
