Title: Dynamo is back
Post by bogarde73 on May 14th, 2013 at 9:52am
OK, can anybody explain to me how he did some of those things on last night's show:
1. The horizontal handstand (I think he's done that one before). Was that whole crowd on the street complicit in some subterfuge with wires?
2. The one with the water poured into the cups but never being there, and then the water level rising in the bottle when he shook it.
3. The levitation infront of the statue of Christ above Rio. Again, is that whole crowd a set up? Did none of them see anything shonky?

Street magic is as fake as you can get. All magic is fake in a sense, but the whole point of it is to trick the crowd by making things that seem impossible happen right in front of them. That's the art of it. Street magic is mostly stooges, camera cuts, and even post filmed computer effects. It is no more "magic" than Darth Vader elevating someone. Anything is possible when it is just an edited video.

he had set up a perspex walkway just below the surface of the water the night before ... the boats crossing in front and behind were set up by him and the pilots knew exactly where they could and couldn't cross without hitting the perspex.

OK I know it's trickery but HOW does he fool all the people gathered around who could see wires or other contraptions?
And can anybody explain the specific tricks I referred to.

well I can see that being the case but how do we know it was.. I mean if he did that too many people would have to know about it and word gets around......I would think..

I mean the Thames in the middle of the Jubilee?? he would have to have all sorts of permission..

Yes, lots of people would know.

However, as long as he doesn't film those people saying what they saw (or he edits them out of the footage), the illusion is still successful.

There are always many people who see these illusions being planned and set up, however, the trick is to simply exclude those people from the final cut of the TV show.

People involved in the illusions are often (if not always) asked to sign confidentiality agreements.

I signed one myself many years ago.

No, that's too far fetched for me. Did you see the show from Rio? Different crowds everywhere and most of them don't speak English. The expressions on their faces are too real to believe they know about how it's done.

I'm sure it'd be safe to spill the beans now, Mr. Peccary!

I'm not saying that everyone in the crowd is asked to sign confidentiality agreements.

The ones who engineer the illusions are asked to keep it secret though.

It's all done with careful planning, a few stooges here and there, and lots and lots of practice.

They're just carefully orchestrated illusions: this sort of thing has been going on for hundreds of years.
