Title: How to change the GST Post by Makka on May 19th, 2013 at 3:39pm
We know the Feds collect the GST for the State government
Does anyone know the process of increasing the GST? I can't imagine the Feds wanting to change it as the increase would gain them nothing financially or politically So anyone saying any Fed government is going to change the GST will need to put a pretty convincing argument forward otherwise they are branded as scare mongering So the question is - can the State governments organise themselves enough to make the change If State gov are LIBs proposing and the Feds are Lab then the ALP will have a field day politically This is not to mention the State governments taking political hits in the polls So I can't see practically how the GST can be changed without the current governments losing at the next election |

they would all have to agree...mmmmmmmmm... so it would be a huge sell that I think is what it would come down too..get more GST and less from the Feds...I think the GST should be upped because then we all contribute..not just income tax payers...which really isnt fair.. well thats as far as things like NDIS are concerned .. its been over 10 years so it isnt unreasonable I wouldnt think... but the way things are distributed needs looking into as well... as well as the way they spend it.. |

If all States had to agree then I would say the likelihood of the GST increasing is about as much as Gillard staying PM

Aparently Labor were planning to increase the GST back then. |

Hows this for scare mongering, Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey says it is up to the states and territories to make a case for changes to the goods and services tax (GST), after NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell called for an overhaul. Mr O'Farrell says the GST formula is broken and he wants to see it reconsidered in the Coalition's proposed tax review. http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/17238164/hockey-tells-states-to-make-case-for-gst-overhaul/ |

Any change to the GST has to be agreed to by all the States and both houses of Federal parliament. The States get all the money so they will agree to it. The Federal Government won't have to give the states as much for health and infrastructure so they will also benefit. As for the political damage... Well all the Coalition have to do is throw up there hands and say "budget emergency" "massive debt" (even though it is amongst the smallest debts in the developed world) and I'm sure their mates at the Murdoch press will come to the party and support it. So yes, an increase to the GST is not only possible but quite probable when the Coalition win the election. |

I agree with GenX.. But allow the states to collect their own GST.. Collection of Tax by the feds was only supposed to be a temp solution during The Great war (WW1) to fund our military. But if Tax collection was returned to the states we would see a better and more democratic type of federal politician. After all they would have to negotiate with the states to get funding and would protect us from wasteful federal Governments like we currently have. |

it free's up the federal money that is now going to the states . States don't just get the GST. |

Simple: every state and territory must agree on the change to the GST, as well as getting it through both Houses in Canberra. |

Time to review GST: Gallagher Updated 2 hours 7 minutes ago Map: ACT ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says she is not trying to undermine her federal Labor colleagues by supporting Coalition moves to review the GST as part of a wider tax assessment. If elected in September, the Coalition will commission a white paper on tax which could include the GST. But federal Labor opposes raising the tax rate and has accused the Opposition of wanting to lift it. Ms Gallagher says the tax needs another look. "I understand it's difficult to have a conversation about it particularly in the lead-up to an election but any rational look at this, and look at the Australian taxation system, would at least have the discussion around the GST not necessarily whether you increase it or change it but have it as part of that discussion," she said. But Ms Gallagher concedes she is out of step with federal Labor. "I'm not trying to undermine anything and you know I'll leave those matters for the Federal Government and the Federal Opposition," she said. "I'm coming from it from the point of the Chief Minister of the ACT and I think it's fair and reasonable that at times we will have different opinions to that of a federal government." |

do you really think so????.... they used to collect the wholesale tax and a right shamozzle that was.. if they collect their own GST we would have a real imbalance thats for sure..and dont forget they can up it when ever it suits them like they did with the wholesale tax.... as it is they get to spend it how they like.. I do think something needs to be done about double bureaucracy in health for starters... for instance NDIS.. is each state going to have its own full blown ministry to micromanage it.. we waste/spend so much on bureaucracy by the time the money trickles down to where it is most needed its almost blown..something needs to be done.. if they plan on upping any form of Taxes at least tell us how it will be spent..they either need to get more efficient or give it to private enterprise we have an overbloated Public service for a country of this size.. and at the end of the day nothing really works. |

Oh dummy, given that majority of public services are administrated by state and not federal governments it makes sense to up the GST as federal government doesnt need to spend massive amounts to prop up the states (Gonski, health, roads, etc) And the time to do it is now where most states have such a healthy majority. The only state that might be scared is Victoria. |

Mr O'Farrell says the GST formula is broken and he wants to see it reconsidered in the Coalition's proposed tax review. absolutely..... I also believe this is the only real solution to ensuring the cash economy ends up paying at least some money to the taxation system. Plus remove the tax exempt status of religious organizations and their employees on turnover from enterprises run by them such as employment services and other enterprises that compete in the economy. ie classify board and lodgings provided by the religious organizations to the clerics as 'assessable income' for the purposes of determining tax due. As well make ALL real estate property and housing transactions subject to GST. Make all Oz nationals declare all income derived OS and pay tax on it. |
