By withdrawing the matter time has been created for preparation of a statement of claim. They intend to restart the action in the Federal Court in the ACT as soon as possible. Ettridge says he has provided extensive evidence for the lawyers to absorb and will be in Canberra later this week advancing the matter. He also says the Australian Federal Police are now considering the matter. The statement concludes: The Australian Federal Police are also currently considering allegations of Abbott’s 1998 unlawful activity in light of a submission and evidence supplied by Ettridge to the Attorney General, Mark Dreyfus, some weeks ago, where Ettridge sought a Parliamentary enquiry into Abbott’s involvement with the Australians for Honest Politics Trust and also for the offence of misfeasance in public office. His submission was referred by the Attorney General to the Federal Police for examination. We await the next instalment expectantly. I hope its put off until after the election. Abbott is the labs best asset. If he were to get elected they should put him in jail for his crimes while he is pm - would serve the hypocrite right. He wont win though.

Didnt realise any of this had anything to do with the case Ettridge is mounting against Abbott?

I dont see the case amounting to Abbott stepping down at any time since it appears to be a civil matter and not a criminal one.

Having a bit of an idea about Abbotts financial position, being someone who had to re-mortgage his home (he has a home loan like the rest of us, not a big deal) he is not overally flush with wealth.  Such as case going against him does have the possibility of putting him in the poor house unless some backers pay for it.

Also like Thommo, he will need someone else to pick up the legal fees along the way too.

OK, so losing could bankrupt Abbott.  Can an undischarged bankrupt hold political office?

No.  They cant hold a position in office, or that of a company director for I think a minimum of 7 years, not even in a volunteer capacity.  They cant hold the title of President in the local footy club if it is incorporated.
