Its simple....its a voluntary tax so all people need to do is not smoke if they dont want to pay tax on tobacco.

Boat people are not a problem. What the problem is is the opportunism of the old parties to turn a humanitarian issue to a xenophobic beat up just to garnish votes.

As for increasing tax on something unhealthy cods. You agree with taxing smoking yet not carbon pollution.

Oh to be a hypocrite.

I'll let you know when it happens but until then its a good way to get extra money to pay for the rising costs tobacco contributes to society and the health system.
Without tobacco there would be many billions of dollars freed up for important public spending like education and infrastructure not to mention the many billions smoking costs businesses in lost productivity.

I dont need a plan B coz Im not ever planning to run for politics. Are you suggesting that if Mr Abbott wins power that taxation isnt going to increase?
Coz Im telling you that whoever wins there will be massive cuts and across the board tax increases so you better get used to it now.

Kevin Rudd slashed over 30 billion in taxes in 2007 and drove interest rates down to make housing $1000's a month cheaper.

Seriously its all about money. You ppl that judge what others do hop on your bandwagons but what if something you do gets taxed like that? How about alcohol? Junk food? Sugar!? Churches. Churches are bad for you and should be taxed. Oh and pharmaceutical drugs. Better tax those. Make sure anyone that uses arthritis medication is penalised with outrageously high prices.

As the Libs have accepted $3M from the tobacco industry over the past years, surely they must oppose this tax increase to keep their donation coming in?

The Libs are not the ones going round saying they don't accept money from big tobacco are they. If anything Rudd's Team Labor accept more money from smokers as they have introduced more taxes on smokers then anyone. Its called creative accounting. They have been taking notes off Swan I think.

Remember this one?

http://www.latrobe.edu.au/news/articles/2009/opinion/turnbull-tax-proposal-has-merit

"Turnbull tax proposal has merit
Tweet 29 May 2009

First published on ABC Online 26 May 2009.

In his response to the budget Malcolm Turnbull proposed a 3 cents per stick tax on cigarettes. This was proposed to fund a gap in the budget that arose through Turnbull’s opposition to abolishing Medicare tax concessions for certain high income citizens."

Wow - put up smoke prices so high income earners are protected.  That would get donations from the Baccy men AND the health Insurance Industry - clever thinking Turnbull!

they most certainly could do with putting a massive tax on alcohol a mother picking up her kids from school was 7 times over the limit.. if she hadnt had an accident [kids are ok] no one would have been any the wiser.

yes a whopping big tax on alcohol.. just to make it a level playing field.
