Title: Gillard not afraid of rising sea levels
Post by salad in on Aug 9th, 2013 at 3:55pm

Quote:
Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard buys $2 million beachside house in her home town of Adelaide

JULIA Gillard has turned her back on working-class Altona for a $2 million beachside bungalow in Adelaide.

Ms Gillard and partner Tim Mathieson are believed to have snapped up this week the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home, complete with an award-winning solar and gas-heated Freedom Pool, with starting block and swim jets.

Since being tossed out of The Lodge, Ms Gillard has been living in the modest brick Altona house in south-western Melbourne, which she purchased in 1998 for $140,000.

But she is now set to move into a more luxurious abode, following in the footsteps of Kevin Rudd, who purchased a $2.175 million mansion in Canberra's leafy Yarralumla after losing the prime ministership.

There was a time when Gillard and her troops tried to scare us about rising sea levels. Many coastal areas would be underwater we were told. If we didn't believe those general warnings the government trotted out Professor Flim Flannery to issue specific warnings about rising sea levels.

What a bunch of phuking hypocrites.

And assuming that Julias new house is near her mums place it will be at least one street back from the beach in the protected St Vincents Gulf.
Suburban Adelaide beaches do not have houses built on them unlike some other areas of Oz.

Salad, beachside does not necessarily mean at the mercy of rising sea levels. There are plenty of reclaimed swamps that are nowhere near the beach that are far more at risk.

Tell Professor Flannery not me. I believe Gillard's new bijou house is located in Beach Road, Brighton. We're all waiting for perpetual undergraduate and high tide specialist Professor Plibersek to give her imprimatur to the purchase.

Beach Road, Brighton...it'll be 200 yrs before the Oceans rise that high assuming we never do anything about climate change...yep shes in real trouble  :D

Yet the OP tells us she is a "phuking hypocrite"!!

THat probably applies more to the OP

They think its the Gold Coast and shes got a love shack on the beach  :D

So - let's take the mid-range estimate of 80cm rise by 2100:

I run training courses in surface water flow modelling and that map looks like it was drawn by an intern.  apart from the fact that the 80cm figure is a guess based on faulty data, that map is way off target.  For one thing it neglects to handle tidal changes which once they have breached the beach would vary inundation by several kilometres of what is a very, very flat Adelaide plain.  I am near the foothills and with double that level (1.6) Id have water at my door.

I wasn't calling her a hypocrite.  I was calling the flood plain map bogus and as a fellow adeladian you can also see the bogus nature of how they simply moved the coast in a bit.  It still looks like amateur hour.

That's if it rose 80cm overnight. What if it took a few decades? Do you do sand flow modelling also? The sand moves a long way up and down the beach with every storm and big swell period. The beach in no way "hold's back" the water, as there is always a creek or river for the water to get in. Unless you are right on the beach or the headlands move, it is your height above sea level that matters.

I repeat that the modelling looks amateurish with no attempt to model beach movements or other such effects.  it has simply taken todays elevations and moved them inland.  a teenager could do that.

I think the story is viable enough to report, given the location of where she wants to buy the house at a beachfront, given the climate change believers like juliar herself and the zealots who fearmonger about rising sea levels you would think the last place they would buy a house or property is by the sea, where the dreaded sea levels would rise due to this supposed global warming by humans.
