Title: Rudd to Abbott: Wait for me

Labor pledges lower company tax in new Northern Territory economic zone

KEVIN Rudd has pledged to create a special economic zone in the Northern Territory, with a company tax rate up to a third lower than elsewhere in Australia.

Unveiling Labor's northern Australia policy in Darwin, the Prime Minister also pledged to build the third stage of the Ord River irrigation scheme in Western Australia, and develop special economic development plans for north Queensland centres.

Mr Rudd said the NT's special status under the constitution would allow the creation of a special taxation zone.

“My personal objective for the territory is it would be great to have a company tax rate here one-third lower than that of the rest of the country,” he said.

Mr Rudd failed to provide costings for the pledge, which would not be delivered until 2018.

A one-third cut would reduce the corporate tax rate to 20 per cent.

See what we mean by not releasing Liberal policies too early?  Rudd simply grabs them and uses them for himself.  This one is a joke. UNcosted of course, it applies to just one area - a place where he needs to get votes.  Im waiting for him to declare western Sydney a special economic zone with lower income taxes.

You know how to tell when Rudd is bereft of policies? Out come the attack ads. He has got nothing, so out come the attack ads. The sad thing about them is that those attack ads have no truth in them whatsoever!

You are right.  Attack is the alternative to policy and Rudd has none.  With all the talk about Liberal policies so far they are the only ones to release any policies.  And Labor don't even appear to have any policies and certainly no costings.  But would you believe a labor policy?  And what about their costings?

nothing to see and certainly nothing to vote for.

The government has attacked the Coalition's draft paper, which reportedly includes plans to divide the north into different tax zones and reallocate $800 million from the foreign aid budget to build a tropical health medical centre in far-north Queensland.

Foreign Minister Bob Carr on Thursday slammed the proposed cut to foreign aid, saying it would damage relations with countries such as Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

Senator Carr said it would meant that causes such as polio, HIV and malaria would not get as much funding.

''This shows their recklessness on foreign policy,'' he told reporters in Canberra. ''It would damage Australia's standing in the world.''

He said that the draft Coalition plan was different from the government's plan to fund the cost of looking after refugees on Australian soil from the aid budget, at a cost of $375 million.

''What Tony Abbott's doing is radically different,'' he said.

Even more contentious in this election year are reports that western Sydney will lose some 20,000 public sector jobs to northern regions under the plan. With 10 western Sydney seats held by Labor within a margin of about 5 per cent, many say the election will be won or lost in that region.

Assistant Treasurer David Bradbury told Sky News the Coalition's northern plan would be ''hundreds of billions of dollars of white elephant infrastructure''.

Mr Bradbury, who represents Lindsay, a western Sydney seat Labor holds by only 1.1 per cent, said Mr Abbott's idea would result in ''gold plated footpaths in Karratha while people are stuck in traffic gridlock in Sydney''.

Greens leader Christine Milne also rejected the plan, saying it was a recycled idea from former Queensland premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen and mining magnate Gina Rinehart.

She said it was an ''old frontiersman'' plan that didn't fit in with what the Australian economy needed, which was a transition out of a ''dig it up, cut it down and ship it away'' mentality.

''This is just Tony Abbott doing what Joh Bjelke-Petersen and Gina Rinehart want,'' Ms Milne said.

I hope Bradbury and the gang don't find fault with Rudd's plan. I hope Gina Rinehart isn't dictating ALP policy.

The ALP is the 'enlightened and progressive' party.

You have a deplorable lack of knowledge about the things you try and discuss.  How about you try and get a few of the facts straight first before you launch out and abuse abbott and the libs of this that and the other thing while being unaware they propose no such thing.

He promoted himself in 2007 as a younger version of howard - an economic conservative.  Unfortunately, a lot of people bought it.  Instead he turned ins a compete dud.

Sprintcyclist

The problem for Rudd is that the Gillard collateral damage is all over the place, she went out of her way to attack everything and everyone, what surprised me was that the ALP primary did not dip below 20%.

Every time Rudd tries a positive policy the Libs can just bring up rubbish the ALP have already said just about on everything, even rubbish motor mouth Rudd has said himself.

The ALP will need a decade of clear air to get the own stench to dissipate assuming they don't add to it on the way.

Not sure what this economic zone policy on the fly is all about ...... there is not that much for the ALP to gain for a lot of pain of copying Liberal party policy.
