Title: Labor surprisingly buoyant

Just flicked on the telly, and Labor seem quite pragmatic about the vote at this stage.

Smith is confident of holding their 3 seats in WA and looking strong in their heartland of Western Sydney.

Yes, that's correct.  I reckon they are happy to have dodged a bullet.

I don't think anyone woke up this morning expecting anything but a LNP victory.

Labor bought Rudd back for one reason and one reason only ... and it worked. If they had kept Gillard, they were looking at 35 seats maximum ... Rudds at least kept it respectable.

I also thought Labor had a chance of victory if they swapped to Rudd at the right time. I was never confident but I was hopeful.

Every ALP Cabinet member returned. That's an outstanding outcome coming from where they were.

The ALP did not dodge a bullet, the ALP lost. Rudd did his duty, he turned a landslide into an honourable loss.

The ALP even retained Eden-Monaro, the first time that this seat has gone to the Opposition party for more than 40 years.

AS Peter Costello remarked when told that the labor campaign considered 60 seats a good result 'no wonder they lost if they thought that was a good result.'

labor just had its lowest vote in 100 years.  there is nothing to be pleased about.  it was an appallingly bad showing.

Hi Longy,

You mean the swing in Sydney's west was not as big as expected ?

What about Vic / Tas ?

Its a mixed result if you ask me but the size of the loss was predicted by the polls, with the ALP primary @ 34% that is not a good look.

I think the ALP knew they were going to lose.
