Title: Double Dissolution
Post by Greens_Win on Sep 7th, 2013 at 9:48pm
Libs polling has been pathetic compared to the polling the last few months showing a landslide.

The senate vote will also reflect this weak support for Abbott.

Abbott said he will not negotiate so when will the DD election be called?

Rudd may not be going anywhere. Thank God Gillard didn't recontest.

I don't think he's going to be so eager to rush into a DD now. It seems like they were expecting to deliver a bigger flogging than what they did.

Then again, who knows what goes through that front bottom's mind?

He probably will go for a DD.

Watching it now, Rudd might think Abbott will risk a DD because this concession speech doesn't look like that of a retiring leader. I don't think Rudds going to resign as leader, not tonight anyway.

I bet he won't have the balls!  The whole threat of a DD was the catalyst for how I chose to vote today.  The people have voted and he has to work with what their wishes are.  If he cannot do that he needs to step aside for someone who can.

Ooooops - he just did.  New blood is needed and he did the right thing.

Greens have already lost the BOP in the senate according to the ABC election site.

DD no longer an issue  :(

The Greens will not have the balance of power in the new Senate. The balance of power will be held by diverse minor parties. The new Abbott government will have to herd cats in much the same way that dogged the Rudd government after July 2008. I don't think Abbott's a cat person, figuratively speaking.

It will take five or so months at least to get a DD trigger (with Abbott complaining loudly and hypocritically about mandates the whole time). It will be ten months before the new Senate take their seats.

I expect he's not going to be so hasty, given that the new Senate should have its own chance at the rejected legislation. If there's a DD election, it will probably be in the second half of next year in September or October. Yet by then his support may have eroded. He will only take the chance if he still enjoys support.

So lameduck Abbott lied and will negotiate with a hostile senate.

Labors tables turned when Rudd refused to go to a DD after saying he would, and Abbott will find himself in the same position if he doesn't go through with it. Although he may not want to by that time ... I doubt his numbers will stay high for very long.

perhaps not...

Fairfax simulations have Greens retaining BOP  [smiley=beer.gif]

Quote:
The simulations, carried out for Fairfax Media by a politically independent statistician who wishes to be known only as ''the truth seeker'', show the most likely outcomes in each state would see the Greens gaining three seats, despite losing votes, to retain the balance of power.

It is still on the table if Abbott wants to ram through his paid parental leave scheme or repeal the mining tax. The crossbenchers (and likely new crossbenchers) broadly support a mining tax and think the Coalition's PPL scheme is too generous.

So - what are the results for the senate?
