Title: The Entire NBN Board Resigns.

Entire NBN board resigns

The board of NBN Co has offered to resign en masse, falling on their sword amid suggestions they do not have the confidence of the incoming government.      :o

The chairwoman Siobhan McKenna submitted her resignation to the Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull, along with the rest of the board. Former Telstra boss Ziggy Switkowski is waiting in the wings to be appointed executive chairman.      :(

Kerry Schott is expected to be one of the only directors invited to stay on by Mr Turnbull, who has been highly critical of the board and the way the company has been run under the Labor government.

The resignations have not yet been accepted by Mr Turnbull. A decision is to be made at a cabinet meeting early next month. Mr Turnbull has blamed the board and executive team for the massive cost blowouts, timetable delays and for contractors losing money.

The board clear-out is the latest upheaval for Australia's largest infrastructure project and highlights the task facing Mr Turnbull as he moves to implement the Coalition's vastly different plan for the project.

NBN chief executive Mike Quigley saw the writing on the wall in July as polls indicated a landslide win to the Coalition and resigned suddenly after signing a new three-year contract with NBN Co.

Under Dr Switkowski three separate reviews and a forensic audit of NBN Co will be undertaken immediately to look at the ownership structure, which could include the private sector being invited to take equity to help fund the rollout.

NBN Co will switch from a fibre-to-the-home network to the cheaper fibre-to-the-node and fibre-to-the-basement network, which will require massive changes to contracts and relationships with contractors, Telstra and other networks.      :(

It will require a renegotiation of the Telstra/NBN deal to arrange copper access and compensation as well as redesigning the rollout.

Mr Turnbull, a long-time critic of NBN Co, has previously accused the project of being bogged down by infighting.

Following the resignation of Mr Quigley, Mr Turnbull turned his attention to Ms McKenna. He described her as having "no experience" in the telecoms sector and raised questions about whether her background as a management consultant qualified her to chair a network business. In July Mr Turnbull also hinted he might sack some board members.

Mr Turnbull's office declined to comment. Dr Switkowski could not be reached.

Clearly they quit because it's the other way around and so they jumped before being pushed by a government that has little or no confidence in the NBN board...

I heard they had OFFERED to resign - not fully resigned as suggested in the OP.  The ball is in Turnbull's court now.  If they all resign, that is a lot of corporate knowledge to lose in one big hit -  that may put the project back many years

after recent sackings of useless Public Sector senior Bosses who have failed the Australian people I guess the rest of this useless lot have seen the writing on the wall and have decided to jump...

well good riddance to the worthless losers...

Well done Tony... (insert clapping emoticon)

For the LATTER, the  LibNats have achieved this on their OWN - thank-you very much

Yes areas already covered by adequate speed internet were never intended to be the first on the list.

Unfortunately like me now you will very likely get nothing never, you will be left to covert third world internet speeds.

It happened almost by accident. A Yank who didn't understand that Australia isn't the US tried to thwart the government. The government responded with a plan to build over monopoly assets for which the Yank was responsible, rendering them worthless. As a shareholder, I was right royally pissed off (with Trujillo).

For a brief moment, Australia had the promise of world-class infrastructure.

Funny thing, according to media reports the only director likely to be retained is Kerry Schott.
She appears to be the only one with visible Labor connections.
But nobody knows yet what the cabinet will do with the "offered" resignations.

NBN board slurs 'disgraceful': Albanese

Date
    September 23, 2013

Opposition communications spokesman Anthony Albanese says news that all but one of NBN Co’s directors have offered to resign is an indication the Coalition has already started ‘‘wrecking’’ the National Broadband Network.      :(

‘‘Mr Turnbull’s ongoing slurs on the professionalism and competence of the NBN Co board have been disgraceful,’’ Mr Albanese said.

‘‘NBN Co’s board members are directing the rollout of Australia’s largest ever infrastructure project and deserve support, not denigration. It is clear that the Coalition is determined to forge ahead with its plan to wreck the NBN, putting in its place a second rate network that relies on last century’s copper.’’      :(

Mr Albanese called on Mr Turnbull to confirm whether the board has offered its resignation en masse and whether he will accept it or reject it, but the new Communications Minister has not yet made any public comments about the board’s move.

Meanwhile, Telstra has confirmed it has started testing fibre-to-the-node and vectoring technologies at a secret location on its network.

The tests were being conducted with equipment provider Alcatel-Lucent, which has been one of Telstra’s suppliers for many years and has been involved in several FTTN roll outs in Europe.

The NBN is massively behind (only meeting 20% of targets) and with huge budget blowouts and contractors abandoning ship over payments.

They are resigning to avoid being sacked.

Now that the world has progressed away from FTTN they are looking to make a buck from the old technology in third world and back lot places.

It is understood the NBN rollout will fall significantly short of its target set in August last year to run fibre past 1.31 million premises by the end of this financial year. The number of existing premises to be passed is now believed to be as low as 600,000.

Thats 45.8% of targets, not 20%.

I have heard it reported as FAR lower.  and the 600,000 remains an estimate and we know how dodgy some of those NBN figures have been in the past.

They were way off on the revised target at all.  It was revised in November to be 190-220 and delivered 207.

its the communist Russia approach.  you restate your targets repeatedly so that when the bad news eventuates, they can claim accuracy.  Bottom line is that at the current rate, half the population will die before it is completed.  That's why NBN is being fundamentally altered: so that it can actually be completed.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has released an "interim statement of expectations" to NBN Co, setting new targets and asking it to keep rolling out fibre to the premises until a review is complete.

Forecasts for the number of premises passed by fibre cable have been revised down.

The figure is expected to be 729,000 by June 30, 2014, 1.74 million by June 20, 2015, and 3.115 million by June 30, 2016.
