thelastnail,
Is the name of the company who have helped the US Air Force develop this system, called Cyberdyne Systems ? And, are they working on another product/development, called Skynet ? [just kidding! ;) ] |

Another target drone. Merely a way to more realistically test missiles and use up old, outmoded aircraft.

Agree with Brian they were using old F-4 Phantoms prior to old F-16s. Phantoms were used because there were so many airframes available until all suitable were consumed as target drones.
As to using old teen series aircraft as platforms to launch weapons and go into bad guy territory I think that is unlikely - designs such as the X-47B unmanned drone demonstrator recently tested aboard CVN-77 are more likely to continue to evolve and be used for this purpose. However, I do not think the day of the pilot in the coxpit is over, rather to be more like a combination of long range, stealthy, bombed up drones and manned aircraft. |
