While I can't vote in an election because you mean, lousy Aussies won't let me, even though I am affected by the result, at least I get to vote on the party leader.
How many others here are members of a political party? C'mon, 'fess up. |

Not me - although my Dad was a rampant Labor man in the 40s 50s etc. I describe myself as left leaning, but tend to vote for the guy i think will do the best job.
I just left Cairns and voted for good ol Warren Entsch - partly because that bloke really listens to the community. If I had of voted up here in Darwin, I probably would have voted for the Labor man The two elections prior to this one I voted for Greg Hunt - in opposition for most of that time - but a good bloke in my electorate. I can sum by saying their is usually a stand out candidate who will get my vote regardless of major party. If neck and neck though - I would vote Labor |

Matty's in the Dunedin Libs, PF. They ran for the federal seat of Lingiari.
While you might not be able to post on Australian internet sites from New Zealand, you can still run for office. Thoughts? |

Used to be a member when I was in australia.
Lindsay Tanner was my local member. Went to a few meetings. Handed out how to vote cards in a couple of elections. Let my membership lapse in early 2000s. Found the greens echoed more of my beliefs. Would consider rejoining if I came back to australia and if they had a leader I could proudly support. Another Keating for example. |

Im a member of the didyoubringthegrogalong party. I like it because they are a well grounded party whose roots stem back centuries, as it was formed as an official movement by the small but vocal crackatinny tribe in outback Queensland as an answer to finally being heard by the decision makers. You could call our coming into existence is a bit like the that of the union movement, but without the corruption and better parties.

Never have been a member of a political party and I don't intend to join any of them. As I cast my eye over the various parties I feel let down by the quality of those who make it to MP status. I regard them as low life petty criminals.
Take the average misbehaving MP for instance. He gets caught with his fingers in the till and his mates start airbrushing him or her with the usual encomiams. "He made an honest mistake", "the rules regarding T/A are unclear", "he is a very nice person once you get to know him"....all that sort of crap. The bloke is a phuking thief and a low life. Come out and say it rather than try to hide him behind a wall of cheap mitigating circumstances and lame excuses. Those who try to defend his actions are just as vile as the tortfeasor. Say it you bunch of vile turds: the bloke is a thief. |

The closest I ever came to joining a political party was Labor when Beasley was leader in Howard's first term. I still have the application form in my bottom kitchen drawer. |

In truth, though, I don't think that many people would agree 100% with every policy of a party, even many politicians themselves. You see division all of the time in both major parties over policy. Not so common with the minor parties, because there are fewer of them, but even there, it happens from time to time. |

Title: Re: I've joined the Labor Party Post by aquascoot on Sep 27th, 2013 at 6:56am
whilst i'm interested in politics, i mainly see it as a negative force for the advancement of the welfare of the citizenry (both economic and social advancement).
naerly all economic advancement is better handled by the private sector. this is where the drive and innovation and teamwork and high morale and "get things done ' attitude will always reside. so in matters economic, i see the role of government as setting the rules and being the umpire and letting business get on with it (competition policy). on social welfare, the environment, health, education, again i see that these things are better handled by empowering people at a community level. local volunteer organizations (meals on wheels, salvos,)in social welfare, landcare groups in the environement (clean up australia day etc), in health local doctors , nurses and local hospital boards (which canberra can fund, but must then remove its clipboard mentality), in education (local school boards with a voucher system so the federal money follows the child and teachers have to "tout for business". i see no evidence that either side of politics is serious about reduced the size and influence of government. it seems obvious with maternity schemes, disability schemes, child care schemes, proposed dental schemes, carbon schemes,...etc etc . that canberra sees its role as being ever more all-embracing. this , i feel, is the wrong path. people prosper when they run small businesses and fail and learn and try again. people prosper socailly when they solve their social problems themselves, be they unemployment, disability, health. learned helplessness and government separation anxiety only lead to a frightened, anxious electorate with no self esteem, no self worth and no self celebration. how can people develop a sense of achievement if they are constantly mothered and , dare i say, badly parented by our political masters. i once hoped the liberal party would be the party of small government, supporting small business and individuals. a party to be kind to people, to encourage people and to challenge people. i see now that i was wrong. they are filled with career politicians and people with no life skills . they seek big government and grand centralised visions. they should have checked their egos at the door , but this has not been the case. so, no, i would never join a party. i would join landcare, teaching english to assylum seekers, horse riding for the disabled, volunteer marine rescue, rural firefighters. if i had spare time ( i'm actually a member of 2 of those). these give me great personal satisfaction as we "get things done" clipboards, focus groups, think tanks....no thank you ;) ;) |
Title: Re: I've joined the Labor Party Post by pansi1951 on Sep 27th, 2013 at 7:08am I joined the Wikileaks Party before the election. It was more of a statement than a serious club membership event, cheap at $20..... I have given much more than that over the years in donations for his legal bills. Not really for any political reason, although I go for truth and accountability above all else (you all really should) also because I like people who rat on dishonest governments....there's that truth thing again. Whistle-blowers are my favourite kind of people. Go democracy!!!! |
