Title: Opt out of global data surveillance.

New technology:

Here is an interesting site which could allow people to not be spied on:

Opt out of global data surveillance programs like PRISM, XKeyscore and Tempora.
Stop governments from spying on you by encrypting your communications
and ending your reliance on proprietary services.

It's sickening to me that Govts. including Australia
are doing the same thing as steaming open all you letters in the mail -
reading them, copying them & storing them forever -
the sealing them up again so you don't know that your privacy has been invaded.

Doesn't anyone have a right to privacy anymore?
Well apparently privacy is available from the above link
which shows many such products.
It can however mean loading Linux which would be a pain to use
&  if you did use windows then  Microsoft's update program
could insert a keylogger into your system without  your knowledge
which would give away all your encryption keys.

Anti-virus programs are not able to control Microsoft's secret operating system.

What do you all think about this?

Linux is very easy to use. It's much easier to install than Windows, and you can use it to read all your Windows generated files. No more annoying Anti-virus nags. I use it because it just installs and works out of the box.

Download and Install Linux Mint Julia 15

Thanks Muso,
I would need to organize another computer to try Linux out.

Have you tried any of the programs in the list I gave?

cheers

I don't have any need for security programs or encryption.  I wouldn't use LMDE. Maybe they have improved it since I tried it last, but it required a bit more knowledge. Linux Mint Julia is probably a better bet. I think it supports encryption.

The KDE version  is fine as long as you have a good computer system but like Windows 7, it has a few overheads.  I don't like it much but I use a few of the KDE apps on Cinnamon. KSnapshot is handy for making screen shots and there is a good FTP app on KDE too, but I use File Zilla because I'm used to it.  This video shows how to customise KDE. You might like it. A lot of people do.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fqe5ZcXJUHI

I would stick with the Cinnamon distribution which also comes with the option of Mate. These are desktop environments. You can try out either Mate or Cinnamon. It's packaged together. You'll like the installation. Just burn the ISO to a DVD and boot off it. If you're connected to the net with the computer, you don't have to choose your local time or anything. It detects it for you.

Cinnamon needs a few tweaks if, like me, you use a HD monitor. There is plenty of information online. I've never tried Windows on HD, but from what I see, it needs some customisation for that too.

No need for restarts. I think more people will probably try it, since they are used to different operating systems these days with Android phones etc.

Try some of the other distros if you want to experiment. XFCE is not a bad desktop these days.

Ubuntu these days reminds me of Windows 8.

You could even install Android. I've never tried it on a PC.

A tip - try looking for test runs of various Linux distros on You tube. If you install Linux Mint, you don't need to keep everything as default. I use gnome icons as standard and a personalised picture on the desktop.

Yes Muso,
the trouble is that the person at the receiving end of  your
emails etc has to have the same program & of course they won't unless it's pre-organized.
It's just such a pity that there's no privacy anymore -
that's if there ever was.

There is some Govt. program at the moment to get people's medical records online
to help in an emergency medical situation etc but
I feel that privacy concerns will stop most people ever joining up.
That's a pity because it may cause loss of life.

My Wife's computer is on Windows 8, but I installed Shell to make it look like XP.  I gave up on installing the Windows mail because it needed a Microsoft account. I installed Thunderbird for Windows instead, which is the email client I use on Linux. I dread fixing problems on that machine.

The information being gathered WILL be used at some point. Many of the crimes perpetrated by its use will go undetected and unreported. Well I'm glad I didn't reproduce and condemn innocent people to this dystopian nightmare. I'm not sure what kind of sick zoo these paranoid delusionals are trying to build here, but my DNA doesn't want any part of it.

Yes - Thunderbird looks quite good.
It can also be made private:

Australia's constitution relates exclusively to the trade and financial arrangements between the states and the Federal government in Canberra.

We do not have any constitutional protections with respect to basic human rights. Nothing, Zero,

What we think is freedom Australia can be taken away tomorrow by the state. We effectively live in Police state. Even the military forces can be assembled to act against Australians citizens

The USA has a very good constitution and bill or rights - problem is TODAY these protections are suspended under the Patriots Acts (fascism) and the NDAA (more fascism)

What do you want PRIVACY FOR when you don't have basic freedoms and human rights?

It would be like being in Jail and the warden allowing you to have a curtain within your cell

I agree.
Though Australians on the whole are apathetic about it.
Too big to fail, won't happen here mentality.

Wasn't the army used once to break up a coal strike in Australia?

The subject of privacy is not clear in Australia:

It certainly doesn't stop our Govt. from the right to read everyone's emails & store them.

Yep, 1949 by the sitting Labor Government, and 7 times since, using the army, the navy and the airforce.

I think I'll install Linux on an old computer just to try it out.

It will mean formatting the hard disk - I think - & starting from scratch.
At least I wouldn't have to use Microsoft spyware.
