Mining billionaire Andrew Forrest is set to make the largest known philanthropic donation in Australian history.

It is understood Mr Forrest will donate $65 million towards higher education in Western Australia.

Most of the money is slated to go towards funding scholarships.

Mr Forrest is the chairman of WA mining company Fortescue Metals Group and was recently appointed as the head of a government review into Indigenous training and job programs.

The donation will be formally announced at a gala dinner tomorrow night to be attended by the Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the West Australian Premier Colin Barnett.

In May, Mr Forrest's wealth was valued at $3.66 billion by the magazine BRW, putting him ninth on a list of the country's richest people.

Some of the largest previous donations include $27.5 million donated by Irish-American philanthropist Chuck Feeney to the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in 2011, as well as $15 million given to Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art by Simon Mordant AM and his wife Catriona.

Meanwhile, Philanthropy Australia has and is asking the nation to vote for its top 10.
