Bam has quite the record for being a little forum dictator.  He used to be el supremo dictator-for-life at another politics forum which went under, largely because he banned everyone who disagreed with him which was unsurprisingly, everyone with a right-wing opinion.  In the end, that forum only had about 6 people left on it as he banned so many people and even the left-wingers got sick of his crap.

He is a whiny little child who complains to the mods all the time who to their discredit, listen to him.

the last thing we want is moderators that only acts on complaints from whiny little cry babies like Bam and Skippy.

we don't like bam-style 'dobbers' nor do we like the apparently arbitrary approach to moderation.  you have said yourself that you mainly ONLY act on reports ie 'dobbing'.  when you moderate responsibly and across-the-board then the rules might mean something but at the moment they are generally ignore because the moderators do likewise.

oh and getting banned WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION which is what usually happens is utterly pointless.  how can we change our ways if we are not told which rule we broke?  All I have worked out so far is that it is a banning offence to mock the Greens, call someone gay but calling them a pedo is okay.

The selective moderating is one of the great mysteries of this forum. I'll give 4 examples:

Skippy posts abuse in almost every post. He's constantly calling his opponents 'conga line of suckholes' 'f*cktards' etc, yet is still here and abuses with impunity.

SOB still posts here (rarely now though), yet he trolled the forum for well over a year, disrupting almost every thread he was involved in. He abused, took the topic off course, then dobbed on others for doing less than he.

Kat still posts, yet constantly posts about having his opponents killed, maimed, and the like. He's been doing it for well over 6 months. Yet the moderators don't care.

Then there is another poster who received a lifetime ban. Yet this particular poster was one of only a few that tried to debate topics through to their conclusions. The unfortunate thing was this poster got caught up in the abuse that was directed at him, and when he retaliated he received a life ban. While the poster in question still posts regularly, and posts the same abusive garbage everytime he commits to keyboard.

Muso doesn't know what he's doing. I've caught him out engaging in the very behaviour that he condemns. He's a fraud, a liar, and deceptive.

I was a moderator and very successful one.  the bad behaviour that Muso and other mods find impossible to deal with was resolved in a matter of days.  Its not rocket science.  IN fact, it is rather easy to do . it just demands all the things the current moderators lack: commitment, consistency, presence and a lack of bias.  Do it for just a week and the rest is just maintenance.

But your lack of acceptance will simply amount to demonstrating ignorance.

Bottom line is, the come out swinging thread that this is, is, as has been named, nothing more than bullying, only I would also add the word cowardly. Particularly given we are all able to hide behind the anonymity afforded us by the internet then these kinds of attacks are nothing more than cowardly.

The forum has rules, pretty simple stuff, follow them or face the consequences. The demonstrated incapacity or unwillingness to face the consequences (regardless of how moderators became aware of an infraction) says more about the OP poster and their faceless supporters than about the person who informed the moderators, if in fact that was the case.

Oh, and as to the presence or absence of moderators. Probably a flawed assumption on my part, but, I would have assumed we are all adults here, so, do some of you seriously need a moderator here 24/7 holding your hand because you lack the basic self control to exercise your own moderation as to how you choose to respond? Seriously?

The only thing the absence of moderators demonstrates clearly to me is that the rules are basically irrelevant to many posters here and, whilst they can get away with it, will deliberately ignore and breach the rules. These people need constant moderation and/or the moderators obviously need other posters to give them a heads up.

A personal pet hate is the number of threads all about the one topic. I have written about this and seen the excuses, justifications and blatant disregard for the posted guideline. Still the issue persists. I would think either do away with the guideline all together or, enforce it.
