Do you view China has capitalist or socialist?
Personally: I see China more State Capitalist than socialism. Deng Xiaoping introduce capitalist aspects to the socialist state. "Controls on private businesses and government intervention continued to decrease, and there was small-scale privatization of state enterprises. A notable development was the decentralization of state control, leaving local provincial leaders to experiment with ways to increase economic growth and privatize the state sector." Following these reforms China saw an unprecedented growth which was not seen during the Mao years of socialism. |

China is complicated, never black and white.
It is becoming more and more Capitalist by the China's social security program is improving along with their prosperity. Interestingly, a much fairer retirement age than our lucky country. retirement ages for men (currently at 60) and women (currently at 55 for white-collar females and as low as 50 for factory workers). |

They really have no choice if youth are to ever have a chance at work/productive life. Idle youth should be a major worry for any country. |

I would think that it would depend on what level of Chinese society you are looking at, as it has elements of both. For the ordinary employed worker, it would just be another Communist dictatorship (I would hesitate to use the word "Socialist", as it is not really the same thing). For people who run small family businesses, it would probably be the worst of both worlds. For those who are wealthy and have their own businesses, it would be (very) Capitalist. For those in government, it would be a difficult balancing act: trying to appear to the masses to be Socialist while at the same time acting like a distorted sort of Capitalist. |

China was and to some extent still is a communist country.
Just because the media has stopped using the term "communist china" doesn't mean china isn't communist. And lets not forget that for china to be a fully fledged communist country it killed approximately 60 million of its own people just because those 60 million did not agree with becoming communist. Furthermore, both capitalism and communism are part of a Hegelian dialect where the Thesis is capitalism, the anti-Thesis is communism and the Synthesis is Corporate Feudalism; this is where corporations act in unison to run the entire world. China is in fact becoming a Corporate Feudalist state. |

It's a rapidly developing market economy with a significant middle class.
As a consequence, political freedom will probably increase. Politically, it could be defined as an oligarchy right now, but watch this space. People are speaking about politics more openly. Right now, the Peoples' Congress is just a front. It's going to be difficult for the politburo to reliquish its vice-like grip on the country, but ultimately it probably has to in order to survive. It will be interesting to see what happens to the global economy when this inevitably happens. |

China is an empire, not a federal state freely joined. It would fall apart like Yugoslavia or the Soviet Union if freedom took hold. |

Communism, according to Marx, was the last stage of societal development. Socialism was the one just before it. Socialism is where the workers and the state control all finance and means of production. Communism where where national borders would disappear and people would work 'according their ability and according to their needs'. It is a Romantic view of life where people can engage in whatever hobbies they pleased. Supposedly, one could fish in the morning, read at lunch time, and make crafts in the afternoon.

Well most of China is quite homogenous. China is mostly Han Chinese - around 92%. There are small bits (in terms of population that could possibly break away - Tibet is one, and possibly parts of Xinjiang. The Mongolian Chinese (Inner Mongolia) are unlikely to cede, basically because they already have a great dea of autonomy, and too much to lose if they become part of Mongolia. The reason that I think they are unlikely to break away is that these places have largely been settled by Han Chinese, In some cases, the regions are so thinly populated that they couldn't put up much resistance. |

I consider China as China - don't need a secondary label. |
